Microsoft security update

I have gone to Windows Update and did the download and install on this update (NET Framework Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 KB928366) four times. I have even rebooted even though I was not prompted to do so. The update alert still comes on telling me I need this update. I tried the auto update once too. Anyone else having this problem?

Very strange & yes some other members reporting same problem

Assume that you do have Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 installed?

    Path is C:\Windows\Microsoft .NET\Framework

Received usual auto update System tray icon notification yesterday, updates were successfully installed, then received the normal reboot prompt

KB928366 for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 was one of three updates

Yet the January 2006 Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 update (KB886903) would NOT install on my PC?

Information & download KB928366 is here Security Bulletin MS07-040 - Critical

To add to the first post I did this update last night and I had to turn off my virus scan program for 1.1 update to install. I was getting it downloaded ok but the virus scan was was preventing it from installing. Might be your problem also.

I did a file search and the only "NET Framework" was a shortcut from when Dell built the machine. I thought Windows Update only gave you the updates that applied to you.

Well that’s the way it’s supposed to work “checking your computer for required updates”

If you do have Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 installed you will see it by:

Launch Windows Explorer & open folders C:\Windows\Microsoft .NET\Framework, v1.1 folder is about 52.6MB

Alternatively, open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (ensure show updates is check box enabled)

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 will appear & just below it you see Hotfix KB928366

Interesting what dbramlet said, I checked back January 2006 records when KB886903 didn’t install

The problem was caused by a Firewall (ZAP) warning prompt, retried & then selected Allow, to enable install

Have since changed both FW & AV software, didn’t get any warning prompts this time?

Vista users obtain a Security warning prompt "An unidentified program wants access to your computer" when trying to install KB928366

Just a thought but an install prerequisite includes need for Microsoft Windows Installer version 3.1

Do a file/folder search for msiexec.exe (Microsoft Windows Installer) to see what version you have

Version 3.1 should be located in C:\Windows32 folder

Also see fix suggestions in MS KB article 922377 for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 SP1 “Updates were unable to be successfully installed”

Note the WindowsUpdate.log referenced in above article is in C:\Windows folder, probably 4th file from top, if you have folder files showing by date modified
