PLEASE HELP!! COMPUTER IS SLOW!!

Question

Here is what happened.  Installed a new power source to my computer last week.  It had XP existing on it.  When rebooting my computer  ZI found I had some software for vista from when I bought my computer about two years ago hat I never touched, or maybe it came from somewhere I dont really know.  Any ways I installed it, and ever since have had a rally hard time operating my compuuter at the speed I was working at.  This is causing me a lot of stress because I am taking some online schooling, and trying to jump between different windows on and off line are killing me.  Everything is processing so slow. And I am not very up on what I am dealing with.  I have tried to unistall some programs that I never use, defragment, and clean some disk soace but nothing seems to work.  I do no know if this is a vista issue or what?  I mean if do not care if I have to go back to xp to get the performance back, I just do not know how or what to do.  Please help, any advice is appreciated.     Thanks!

which operating system are you using? if you're still in XP, you can uninstall the programs from control panel -> add/remove programs. if you are in vista now, stick a flash drive in and use readyboost (my computer -> right click on flash drive -> properties -> readyboost)

If you are running Vista you may need to think about upgrading your memory. Vista is a hungry dog, you'll need 3gb minimum.

FWIW, 2G of memory works very well. Even with lots of apps running, there is no swap file usage and only 53% of the memory is being used on my Inspiron 1501. I agree that 1G is too little but 3G is overkill for most.

I agree. My partner runs her Acer Aspire quite happily with 2Gig. But then she only uses MS office, itunes, the internet etc. ;) My PC on the other hand struggles as it is primarily a gaming machine. Vista uses almost a gig before you even start running other programs. Now I have a BFG 8800 GTX it's time to upgrade my MB, PSU and most importantly my CPU (to quad core) and Memory (to 4gb).

Ok, that is fine.  I would really just like to get rid of Vista and go back to what I was using which was XP.  But like I saig i really do not know what i am doing.  I have aready tried to unistall through programs but i can not find where or how really to get back to XP, and do away with vista.  Since I have installed vista I have also installed some new software for an online line class, and do not want to screw anything up.  I know that i can restore my computer to a specific point, ( day in time before I installed Vista, right?) but what should I do.  I must speed up the performance on my computer.  What is the easiest and fastest way to solve my problem.     Thanks.
