PROBLEM USING MEDIA CENTER TV PROGRAM GUIDE DOWNLOAD

PROBLEM USING MEDIA CENTER TV PROGRAM GUIDE DOWNLOAD

My operating system, purchased pre-installed with my DELL Dimension 8400 computer with dual TV tuners, is Microsoft Windows XP (Professional) Media Center Edition 2005. I have not been able to access nor download the Media Center TV Program Guide since 10-16-2005.

When I attempt to access and download the Program Guide, I get a message which says, “CRITICAL PROCESS FAILURE. A critical Media Center process has unexpectedly failed. If problem persists, please restart your machine and try again, or contact technical support. Code: 3”. A green icon appears in the lower right task bar that indicates “Connecting to the internet to acquire Program Guide”. However, the Program Guide never downloads and the green icon can not be closed.

I have tried restarting the machine, etc., but nothing seems to help the Program Guide download to start. As it is now, I can not record TV programs with either TV tuner (I have dual TV tuners) because the Program Guide only says “Data not available”.

Please advise what the problem might be and an appropriate resolution for that problem that will enable the TV Program Guide to download.

This would be a better place to post: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=sw_xpmedia You should also call Dell if you are still under warranty.

Same response from me as already posted to pmirl elsewhere.

    Just a couple of thoughts.

It may well be that the server you get the guide from was down or having some other problem - the error does say "guide server error".  Depending on the problem it could take a while for them to fix it.

Second thought is, had you upgraded to IE7 before this happened?

Plus you can function without the Guide - the guide is not available here and I watch and record TV with no problem.  You just have to set the channel and the time.  Mind you, I can understand the frustration.  EDIT - Just occured to me most of you have cable TV, and how I use Media Center may not work with that!  So forget I said it if it doesn't apply!

    I have found the solution!

If you cannot download the updates to your Media Center Television guide (you get a code 20) do this:

Open "My Computer" and navigate to C drive, then Documents and Settings then All Users then Application Data then Microsoft then Crypto then RSA then MachineKeys, and deleted the
    1c93d682e65b0f3af0cd51385becba5e_ file.

One day I went to tape a show with the Media Center and the guide was gone. All I kept getting was "No information available". I tried to download the latest guide settings, but no luck. I kept getting a "Code 20" error I called Dell, but after 2 hours + on the phone, the advice I was given by the "tech" was to reboot my computer so it was the same way as it was when I took it out of the box. This means all of my info I added since I got it would be gone. I knew there had to be a different way to fix this so I called Microsoft and their tech had me back to normal within 30 minutes with this simple solution!

    It works fine now!

This may not be exactly related. I am not able to download media centers TV program guide, however, I am not on cable tv nor antenna, but SATELITE. Media Center and the remote are not as sophisticated as my HDDIRECTV DVR guide and remote. DELL must give me specific crosswalk instructions to be able to have MEDIA CENTER replace what DIRECTV can do on remotes. It is not my service provider's fault nor completely DELL but a combination of MICROSOFT and DELL as partners. My error message when trying to download the guide is 13 and 52.
My error in the DELL remote is that it cannot change the channel on the DIRECTV receiver.

DIRECTV's answer is to omit using the Media center remote and continue to use the DIRECTV remote which displays on my monitor screen.

PS I am high definition, but I am not pleased with the focus on my monitor at a whopping 1680 X 1050, 1080i setting. My Magnavox 37 HDTV will knock your sox off, slap georgious.

This is for information, but any comments or solutions would be appreciated.

I am experiencing the same problem. I just switched from cable tv to Direct TV. I am not able to use my Media center remote. Therefore, I can not record my favorite programs and skip the commercials. I have tried to set up the remote clicking through the numbers 5 times now to now avail. I also have the problem of an error message, "Restricted Content". I wrote an email to Microsoft and told me that is wasn't there problem that they just sell the software to Dell. I had a tech from Direct Tv here for a few hours and he came to the conclusion it was his problem because the "box" is working fine. The funny thing is that it was all working fine with cable tv. Any advise? Thanks
