Restoring to factory installation image?
I'm working on a machine that is so hammered with spyware and viruses and whatever a XP SP2 installation without some of the previous upgrades migt have done that I need to get back to the factory image and work from there. I've tried OS upgrades, anti virus scans by mcafee and norton), spyware scans, etc... but the machine is exceedingly slow and essentially useless.
I know that somewhere there is a hidden file of the disk image from the factory but HOW DO I FIND IT and I make use of it?

If your computer was shipped after July 15, 2004, then it was shipped with an image on your hard drive that can be used to go back to the initial state. See the following:

If the computer was shipped before July 15, then you will have to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows, drivers, and applications programs. See the following:

In either case, all additions to your computer, inlcuding, documents, pictures, music, movies, e-mail, favorites, spreadsheets, etc. should be backed up to removal media before performing either opearation.

MS Word, Excel, etc. should be on a separate CD for Microsoft Office. You will have these only if you ordered Microsoft Office with your computer.
You probably need to install the chipset drivers for your motherboard before Windows will recognize the network adapter and before you can install drivers for that adapter. The chipset drivers should be on the Dell Resource CD.

Just a computer user so new to this reinstallation game & doing at night doesn't help, but had to reformat because of virus/trojan issues. Am now reinstalling xp on a (2350) bought May '03. Two questions: 1. where are MS Word, Excell, etc. & how do I get them in play?, & 2. my DSL doesn't work because the ?Network adapter? isn't present ? Probably simple, but I'm a newbie so be gentle w/me and give explicit instructions. Are these files on one of these CDs ? Obviously, I can't use internet to upgrade MS. Also, after upgrading from MS what else should I upgrade? I now have Norton Internet Security & SpySweeper, and will run faithfully. Thanks in advance to any/all.

Thanks Steve for your advice. Am at work & have access to a working machine & will look through CDs to find MS office software which came installed on my machine - surely/hopefully its either MS Office XP version 02 service pack 1 or MS Office XP small business. I'll look on the following Dell CDs for the chipset drivers (any guidance is appreciated): Drivers and Utilities (for reinstalling V.92/56K telephony...), Application (for reinstalling Dell Tools System software), Dimension Resource CD. Do appreciate your help - which counteracts the virus-generators that fouled me up in the 1st place.

Hello all,
Just what are the chipset drivers for your motherboard?
I have a new Dell, about a week old, so I believe I have the image on my hard drive. Has anyone actually used this image to do a restore? I wish there was more information on this image than on that one page that Dell has for it.
