Sonic Update

Sonic Digital Media LE repeatedly looks for update disk when launching ANY of the Sonic modules. The product installed is Sonic DigitalMedia LE V7. I have to hit ESC about 20 times to bust past the Configuring and Install pop-ups. The product does work, however.

I managed to get it to quit on Windows Startup. I have downloaded all patches from the Dell website, I have uninstalled the Sonic Update Manager (and reinstalled the latest, um29.exe, which didn't do anything). I have asked Dell three times to send me the disk to reinstall the product, and keep getting the automated responses. I finally sent one back to them, so we'll see what happens next.

I have performed all suggested actions found in the Forum. What do I try next? Thanks!

I'm replying to my own note. I replied to one of the automated responses and repeated my request for a CD. Within one hour, I received a polite and affirmative response. They are sending me a Sonic CD. What a nice surprise!

Yup you are not alone... I got a brand new Inspiron laptop from dell this week.... out of the box 10 minutes after first power up I got the same problem.  Sonic wants to install the Sonic update.  But I don't have a disk to insert when it asks.

Tried the sonic update download from the sonic support site and it did nothing.

Basically the image Dell is using to image the disks prior to shipping has a bug with Sonic, as far as I can tell.

Another member provided this e-mail address to request the disks for XP and other pre-installed software.  They are sending me the Sonic disk "free" but charged me about $10 for shipping to my Dell card. I didn't feel like arguing.

Thanks, I appreciate the support. The reason I didn't go to Chat in the first place was because of this statement at the top of the page:

> Please note that support chat is only available for hardware...

So...does this mean I can be refunded the shipping on my DigitalMedia CD they are sending me?

Issue completely resolved by Dell Chat. They shipped the Sonic product and all system disks, and refunded the shipping charge. Be polite when you chat....they were extremely helpful and courteous.

I emailed Dell support.  After a few rounds of email they decided to ship me the CD.  It arrived today.

The CD does not have the SONIC software on it.  Infact the CD they shipped is for a Dimension and not an Inspiron.  Dell sent the wrong CD!

So... just sent another email back with the bad news.

the sonic support # is 1-877-383-1124. they tell me that the are getting many calls regarding this problem from new dell purchasers, so i think you are right. get the cd from dell and go to roxio.com-support-knowledge base. type in cleanup and follow instructions

try going to roxio.com. then support-knowledge base. type in cleanup (one word) this will give you the windows installer cleanup utility. read the doc. and if nothing else works use it . it worked for me. you will need the sonic cd to re-install. good luck

Here is a solution if you have not already uninstalled the sonic program updater

The problem with uninstalling it is that there are nessacary updates for your Sonic CD Burning software.  So here is the workaround.  The Sonic updating software is actually a program made my Install Shiled that can be used to update a wide variety of programs in its generic form.  I purchased a Dimension desktop with this same problem and to fix it you need to go to http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111006

and download the Update Manager from Install Shield.  Sonic Update Manager simply works through that program, and I believe it's that programs files that its look for, beucase downloading it fixed problem.  I figured this out becuase I purchased an Inspiron Laptop a few months ago and it had the same software, but it didnt have the problem.  So I simply looked on my laptop and noticed Sonic Update Manager worked though Install Shield's Update Manager.  So I downloaded it onto my desktop and it worked fine.

P.S. if you already uninstalled sonic updater software, this fix wont work, you need to find a way to reinstall the sonic updater software, (use a system restore point if it wasnt too long ago) or search dell.com, maybe there is a download

My Install Shield works fine but the Sonic updater still asks for the disk.  I had to remove the updater.  Most of the updates are security issues associated with music and video downloads.  I don't download these.  However WMP works just fine.  SONIC IS POORLY MADE SOFTWARE.

When Dell sent you the Sonic Disc, did it solve your update manager problem. I just got the disc and it didn't have the file the update manager was looking for.

Congratulations on the correct answer!  You could have found it in Jim Hardin's post to me two weeks ago!

I didn't look at the contents of the disk, but everything worked fine after installation.
