I updated my Vista ultimate at windows update. Rebooted and everything seemed good.Went to bed. Next morning boot and got this.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt :
Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

Did a system restore through vista live pe to before the updates with no change.

Used the bcdedit.exe /? command but just couldnt figure out what command is needed for rebuilding boot. I learned that there is no boot ini in vista. So how do I rebuild the boot file. Was also told I shouldnt just copy a new hal dll to system32. Tried f8 to advanced options and have everything eccept repair. Safemode and other modes comes up with same Hal problem.
