Vista USB Plug & Play problems

Hi,

Here's a bit of a strange one.  From reading the other posts, I'm not alone with the USB problems for plug and play ... here's what's happening with mine - if anyone has any ideas, they will be very much appreciated....

INSPIRON 6400  - Vista Home 32 bit  4 x USB ports

Hardware Items tried:
USB mini-mouse  (works port 1, problem any other port)
Flash drive (1 x 512Mb)   problem on every port
Flash drive (1 x 256Mb)   problem on every port

Problem:
When the item is plugged in, the system tries to install drivers.  No drivers can be found and the installation fails.

The strangest thing is ........... on our main computer, which also runs vista home, they all plug in and work right away.

I have tried:
- Device Manager - no errors
- USB drivers - no updates available, no rollbacks available (computer is one week old!)
- Re-boot, re-start
- Manufacturer websites for drivers.  Only drivers available are for Windows 98 ... the messages say "XP drivers not needed - this item is plug and play"

So, I've run out of ideas .......... can anyone help?    The solution for the moment is to transfer my files from my flash drive to CD on the main computer and read them through my ROM .....

Any suggestions or ideas gratefully received!    Thanks in advance ........ and holding my breath!

    Hi,

Probably the quickest one solved (since posting the message!  Not to mention the 3 hours spent before that ..... :smileytongue: )

Thankfully, I've just found the solution .............  added here for any future users with the same problem....

When the "Install new hardware" comes up,  click on "manual", then  "specify location" and point it to

    c:\ windows \ system32

Make sure the  'search subfolders' checkbox is checked.........

Let the system run through the installation (for flash drives it's four or five times as there are a few drivers)

Mine works fine now ........ flashdrives and mouse.   Looking forward to installing my printer and Dell Axim links (not!)

It must be a Vista bug...

    Hope this helps someone...........

Thank You. I have the same problem with my E1405 notebook. The mouse works but the flash drives and iPod dont!.... is there a permanent solution to this? Since the way you suggested works but is just long and labored... thanks anyway for the temporary fix.

    Hi

I'm pleased it's helped someone else too.

This is a permanent fix .... it installs the drivers for the USB item, which stay there when you reboot.  Mine's OK after an overnight break, so I have made a restore point just incase anything upsets them!

Hopefully yours will be OK - you should only have to do this once

I'm thinking just reformating my hard drive and installing Windows XP media center from my Dell back up CD. I don't think I'm ready for Vista just yet. Any thoughts..

"Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. USB mass storage device The system cannot find the file specified." ****************** This is the message I get with 3 different USB flash drives.

    Hi all

To everyone it's helped.  Good....   dunny-mac, I know just how you feel.

With camera's it's best to remove the memory card and use a card reader for now.  it's just as effective as plugging the camera in, but quicker and simpler - and it saves the power on your camera battery too - go green!   OK, it's a work-around, but it does work, and saves a lot of head-ache.

Flash drives ... plug the drive in, and follow the recommended steps above.  You might have to do this for different flash drives if you own many (like I do), but once you have done it for that particular flash drive, it will work for ever.   Let the system run through ALL the installations, and the drives will install to the same letter each time.  This should sort out that problem.

USB printers, HP printers in particular, the newest IE conflicts with the HP software.  Now, HP know about this - not sure if they're working on it though.   In the meanwhile, just plug your printer in, direct the driver search to the same drive as above, and the printer should work off the Windows software.

USB TV card - A little more difficult when your driver is on the CD it came with, and it won't run unless you have "XP or later" .... it doesn't recognise Vista at all.   Run the program with the compatibility matches to XP, then plug your card in.  The system should find it when you plug the card in.   This works on cards that people have said "won't work on Vista"

For those who are considering a format and install XP .... my thoughts have gone this way too.  However, on the other hand, once something is working, it works better than ever before.  A few work-arounds - granted.   But, once it's in, it's far more capable and user friendly than XP when you get used to it.    Let's face it, none of us like change - especially when it comes with what looks like extra work!   I started with a "I hate this system" feeling back in March ...

Now, my own humble opinion - stick with it.  It's getting better with each update, and as we learn to utilise it fully, we will learn to love it.    We saw it all from Win 3.11 to Win95, Win98, Win2000, Millenium, then XP ....... it's all in the line of progress!

    Don't be beat!

In the instance of the USB TV Tuner I think you are supposed to load the contents of the CD First before plugging in the USB TV Tuner.....

    Hello,
I'm having a similar issue, except that my devices are installed sucessfully but then I get a message that says "cannot detect camera" or printer or external hard drive or whatever I plug into the USB ports. So, I don't even have an option to select the destination that was suggested. Is there another way to do this?
    Thanks so much!!!!!
