Windows XP Slow Start up
Hi:
I am having trouble starting up windows xp. We start with four users, one for each member of the family. Once we select the user name it takes almost a full minute to start up that persons screen. Then it takes another minute for windows to cycle through before we can check e-mail, internect, etc. This is a new problem these events in the past only took a few seconds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike, you are not alone with the problem. Awhile back it was taking all of 3 minutes to have the desktop icons (Inspiron 8100-Win XP- 356mb RAM) appear after booting up. After much frustration & trying various methods to clean-up and update, it now takes 27" to get through the Windows "Welcome' stage and another 30" before icons appear on the main screen (still far too long as compared to desktop running XP in which the "Welcome" stage is shorter and the desktop icons appear w/o entended delay). Today I cut down on startup items, deleted .pf files, and downloaded Spybot Search & Destroy (ref www.pcworld.com fixes for March 2004; pg 176). This hasn't solved the problem which started a couple of months ago, but has helped some it seems). You might try the PC World fixes, but we also need more help!

In response to this problem I would like to know the answer when the problem is solved. Our computer does the same thing with slow start up and log on time. We have destroyed every pest and unwanted "free" program thinking that the problem was an unwanted program starting up with Windows. Our start up time is around 45 sec. to 1 minute and our log on time is 30 seconds. This is unacceptable and a disappointment from the first time we booted up Windows XP. Thanks

I am also having a similar problem with slow startup time for about a month. Has anyone noticed that when upgrading from MSN8 dialup internet connection to MSN9 has been associated with new delays and sluggishness in starting up? I have an additional problem that has me stumped. When I click the start button, I get a box that says "all the items on start up menu cannot be viewed as you have too many. Pls use smaller icons, or "unpin" some of the items." I have just ran the msconfig diagnostic as well as disabled all startup services and MS items to no avail. I have to get rid of this pesty box for my nerves as well as it can be in the way to proceed choosing an item on the startup menu! Greatly, appreciate a reply. . .

Are any Dell support people tuning in?
Since the software/hardware was installed by Dell, (I hopefully can speak for all who are experiencing the "Slow-to Load" problem): we need help or troubleshooting (with Microsoft?) as to identifying the cause and come up with a timely fix as frustrations are wearing thin. I am running XP and same software, etc on both Inspiron 8100 and Dimension 8300, with no problems with the desktop (8300) as it boots without extended delay and and the desktop icons appear as soon as the "Welcome" message is replaced by desktop background image. (only difference is that desktop has 1GB of RAM and laptop has 356MB of RAM).
A timely reply by someone at Dell Support will be much appreciated!

I am in contact with Dell but have not gotten a reply with a helpful solution yet....I will keep you all posted if I get something that works
