windows xp won't bootup

Hi, I have a dimension l866r with windows xp home.  when i turn on the computer i get a back screen saying that windows could not open properly.  it gives me 25 seconds to select from safe mode, normal start or start with command prompt.  it doesnt make a difference which selection is made...the dell.com screen appears, then the windows xp home edition page for all of about 3 seconds.  then it shuts down and starts at the black screen again.  i put macfee antivirus in the d drive but it wont read it.  i cant locate the xp disks.

Help Please!
Thanks

    Hi,

If you cant select safe mode, normal start or start with command prompt you will need your XP CD to fix this problem.

You`ll have to try to find it.

    Hi,

You will be able to try to repair with your upgrade CD.

This could be caused by a few things so we need some more information.

Please post the exact error message.

Hi, I really appreciate your assitance.

    the message follows:

we apologize for the inconvenience  but windows did not start succesfully.  a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.  if ur computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

if a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or rest button was pressed or if u aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.

    safe mode

    safe mode with networking

    safe mode with command prompt

last known good configuration (your recent settings that worked)

    Start windows normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to ur choice.

    Seconds until Windows starts: 30

It doesnt matter what selection I make..the seconds tick down from 30, I get the dell screen with the logo, then the win xp home edition page for a few seconds, then it starts again at the black screen with the above message.  It's a continous loop.  F2 freezes the screen(that's how i could reproduce the message, otherwise the seconds count down from 30)

    Many thanks

    Hmm.........not a lot of help:smileysad:

Had you just updated any drivers, installed a program or made any changes at all?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode  (F8 at boot up) and trying
    Last Known Good Config
    System Restore

no.  no new drivers, software etc.  f8 safe mode, last known config doesn't work.  in the microsoft community forum other people have reported the same problem with booting up xp home and pro.  not much success reported there.  but i'm inclined to think then that it's a software issue not hard drive???

    thanks

    Hi,

The first thing I would do is remove any new hardware that might have been installed, unplug any external devices like printer, scanner, camera, etc... and then try it.
In fact unplug everything not necessary including cards (but NOT video card)

If that doesn`t help boot up with your XP  CD
Press any key when asked to and let set up run.  It will say it is copying files.
The next page you come to there will be an option to select "R".  This is the Recovery Console so select this option.
You will be prompted to select the Windows installation to repair :
    (usually just "1" )
You will need to enter the Administrator password. Normally just press ENTER

    At the command prompt type
Chkdsk /r  (Note there is a space before / )
    ENTER

If that does not work I`d try a repair of XP
A repair won't lose any data, other than Service Pack 1/2, any Windows Updates and unsigned drivers, which will need to be re-installed afterwards.
Stay offline to do a repair and do not go online again without a firewall enabled. After repairing XP, install Service Pack, firewall and then you must install all Critical Updates next.

    How to Repair XP
Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the first "R"  (Recovery Console) repair option by pressing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually come to an option to "Repair an existing installation". Select this one.
