Fixes & Enhancements

The following modifications were made to the A07 BIOS to create A08:

1. Fixed issue in which ISA devices could not be manually reconfigured
to use IRQ 10 in Device Manager.
2. Fixed issue in which some bootable CDs do not boot.
3. Improved accuracy of the battery discharge rate reported to ACPI for
purposes of battery time remaining calculations.
4. Fixed system hang seen when the user suspends the system using the
Sleep Button ( < Fn+Esc >) then closes the lid and resumes after
warm
docking to a docking station with a CRT attached.
5. Fixed issue in which the OS may not be allowed to throttle the CPU
after the system is resumed from Standby.
6. Fixed issue where a Secondary display may not display after a resume
from disk under APM operating systems.
7. Fixed issue in which the internal modem may be redetected by the OS
after enabling the modem to receive incoming calls then performing
a system reboot.
8. Fixed intermittent issue in which the system may fail to complete
POST with AC power attached and a fully discharged battery installed.
9. Fixed issue where system would not automatically reboot after a
remote or floppyless BIOS upgrade.
10. Fixed issue in which the user may need to suspend touchpad and
trackstick use for several seconds before either device will respond.

Enhancements:
1. Replaced < F12 > with < Esc > as the hotkey used to exit the One Time
Boot Menu screen.
2. Improved battery status reporting algorithm to reduce time spent
in SMM when updating the OS battery information.
3. Optimized the thermal management algorithm.

Installation instructions

Default Instructions for C400_A08.exe:

This file format consists of a BIOS executable file. To use it, download
the file and copy it to a DOS-bootable diskette. With the diskette in the
floppy drive, reboot the system and run the program.

This file format contains plain text which can be viewed with a standard
text editor.

Download
1. Click the location, e.g. Americas, from which you want to download
the file.
2. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I
Accept this Agreement.
3. When the File Download window appears, click Save this program to
disk and click OK. The Save In window appears.
4. From the Save In drop-down menu, click to select Desktop and then
click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
5. If a Download Complete window appears, click Close. A new icon
appears on your desktop.

Install
1. Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled C400-A08.exe.
2. The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to c:\dell\drivers\R51592. If you did not print these instructions,
write down this path.
3. The WinZip Self-Extractor window appears
4. Click OK.
5. If the Self-Extractor window is still open, close it.
6. Click the Start button and then click Run.
7. Type c:\dell\drivers\R51592 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8. Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

Download the File to your Desktop

This file C400-A08.exe uses the Floppy Disk format and is designed to be directly executed from Windows environment.

Click Download now

The File Download window appears.

Click the Save button.

The Save As window appears.

Select Desktop using the drop-down menu to the right of Save in.

Click the Save button.

A progress meter moves as the download is completed.

If necessary, click X in the upper right-hand corner of the Download Progress Window to close it upon completion.

NOTE:

Shut down all other applications prior to running the BIOS update utility. The update utility reboots your system in order to get the new BIOS loaded.

Run the BIOS Update Utility From Windows Environment

Double click the Icon on your desktop labeled C400-A08.exe.

The Dell Floppy BIOS Image creation window appears

Click the Continue button.

The Dell Floppy BIOS Image creation utility is copying a bootable image to your diskette.

Click the Finish button.

Shutdown your computer.

Reboot your computer ensuring the newly created floppy disk is inserted in your floppy drive.

Your computer will boot from the floppy diskette and flash the Systems BIOS.

After it has completed, remove the floppy diskette and restart your computer.
