VxRail: Avoid Resetting VUM Database Without Fully Understanding the Impact

Summary: Resetting the VUM database has significant consequences, especially in environments with vCenter in "linked" mode. This action affects all vCenters and clusters attached to them. Before proceeding, consider the following critical points: ...

Instructions

1. Impact on VxRail Depots

When the VUM database is reset, all VxRail depots are removed from the vCenter. After the vCenter performs a "Sync Updates," these VxRail depots will not be automatically re-added.

  • This issue is reflected in the Update tab of the vCenter (not the VxRail plugin), where the status of all nodes in clusters attached to the vCenters displays as "host status unknown."
  • This status results in compliance check failures and upgrade failures.

2. Re-adding Depots VUM db. Post-Reset

  • When you upload the composite bundle for the next upgrade, VxRail depots will be restored.
  • Third-party solution depots (such as NSX and Rubrik) will remain missing. Their absence can lead to additional upgrade failures.
  • While a documented workaround exists to restore NSX depots, additional steps are required to reattach depots for other third-party solutions.

3. Impact on vLCM Cluster Images

For clusters configured with vLCM cluster images (steady-state clusters), resetting the VUM database:

  • Prevents saving or validating associated cluster images
  • This causes failures in maintaining the desired state, as the missing depot is a critical component.

4. Critical Warning for Environments with Third-Party Solutions

If third-party solutions are installed on clusters with configured cluster images, do not reset the VUM database unless explicitly directed by VxRail EE.

5. Review Required.

Resetting the VUM database must only be performed:

  • After a review of the environment
  • With the approval of VxRail EE

Summary

The VUM database reset is a high-risk operation that can lead to cluster-wide compliance and upgrade failures, particularly in environments with third-party solutions. Proceed only after consulting with.
