Symptoms

Error: The disk has reached the end of its service life and needs to be replaced.

Alert Message ID: 14:60284 ALRT_DISK_EOL_COPY_COMPLETED

Cause

When a disk reaches the end of its service life and user data copy is completed , a call home alert is generated asking to replace the drive.

Resolution

Do not start by replacing the drive. Instead, search the support site by the drive part number and check the related articles on instructions on how to upgrade the Unity OE code and the Drive Firmware to the latest revisions available.

Review DTA article 542005: DTA 542005: Dell EMC Unity: Certain SSD drives are improperly calculating the number of days before End of Life (EOL) (User Correctable)  and KB article 539664: Dell EMC Unity: Certain SSD drives prematurely set EOL-End of Life flags, inducing unnecessary drive replacement (User Correctable)  before doing any replacements to make sure that this is not a false positive.

A drive that is already experiencing the EOL issue can be restored with software commands.

Note: Certain SSDs do not need to be replaced for this issue.

If the Dell EMC Unity array is reporting the dial home 14:60284 for one of the below 38 part numbers, verify that the Unity OE code and the Drive Firmware are updated to the latest release first.

For multiple drive EOL reports for a part number and before taking any action, contact Dell EMC Technical Support or your Authorized Service Representative, and quote this KB article ID. If it is determined that the array is running the latest Unity OE code and the latest drive firmware package or the SSD drive reporting the EOL is not included among the affected part numbers mentioned above, then proceed with normal drive replacement.
