Customers have requested that they would like to update the BIOS on an OptiPlex 3070 or 7070 without using an attached monitor. They would like to do this for systems that are managed remotely or are not used with an attached monitor.

Note: This is not possible with BIOS version 1.3.1 or older installed on the system.

Cause

Dell has added this functionality into BIOS update version 1.4.4 which was released June 30, 2020.

Note: While this functionality has been added with version 1.4.4, you will still need to attach a screen to update the system to revision 1.4.4. You will have to wait for the next BIOS update to be released before you can use this feature.

Resolution

Updating to BIOS 1.4.4

Warning: Dell recommends disconnecting any external devices like external hard disk drives, printers, scanners before updating the BIOS.

  1. Browse to the Dell Drivers and downloads page:

  2. Select the Operating System

  3. Under Category, select BIOS

  4. Locate the latest Dell OptiPlex 3070 System BIOS or Dell OptiPlex 7070 System BIOS (Version 1.4.4)

  5. Click Download and save the file to your computer

  6. Open File Explorer and browse to the location where the downloaded file is saved

  7. Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process

  8. Your system will restart as part of the update process

Using the no monitor install with BIOS 1.4.4 installed

This new functionality requires the use of the /novideo switch when updating the BIOS past 1.4.4:

  • The command can be used in either:

    • Command Line (i.e. Command Prompt or PowerShell)

    • Added while running the update file in the Windows Operating System.

  • Command-Line Example:

    OptiPlex_7070_1.5.0.exe /s /r /novideo
