Instructions

Below are two methods for obtaining the build number of a VMware vCenter Server (vCenter Server Appliance for newer versions of vCenter Server). The build number helps to clearly identify the specific build on which a vCenter Server is running. This information is helpful in determining compatibility with patches (hot fixes) and other products from VMware.

Method 1: Connect to the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) using SSH.
  1. If not already done, SSH must be enabled on the VCSA.
  2. Using your tool of choice, open an SSH session to target VCSA using the "root" user account and corresponding password.
  3. Once an SSH session is established, a Command prompt is seen.
  4. Type "shell" and press Enter.
  5. From the shell prompt, type "vpxd -v" and press Enter.
Below is a sample of the output that is returned:
VMware VirtualCenter 7.0.0 build 16189207

Method 2: Connect to vCenter Server using vSphere Client.
  1. Using your web browser of choice, enter the following into the address bar of the web browser window:
https://vcenter-server-fqdn or https://vcenter-server-ip-address
  1. On the Getting Started screen, select LAUNCH VSPHERE CLIENT (HTML5).
  2. When the login screen is shown, enter the Local Admin username for User name (for example, the default is administrator@vsphere.local).
  3. Enter the corresponding Password for the supplied local admin account in the password field and click LOGIN.
  4. Once logged in to the UI, with Host and Clusters selected on the upper left side of the window, select the vCenter Server object. This is the first object in the list.
  5. On the right side of the window, you see a Summary tab.
  6. Select the Summary tab if not already selected.
  7. On the first two lines under Summary, see Version and Build.
Example:
Version:   7.0.0
Build:       16189207
