Symptoms

Connectrix MDS9148S or 9148T running 8.4(2a) or 8.4(2f) with non-supported third-party Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) may report Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) - SFP checksum errors.

Cause

This issue is documented under Cisco issue CSCvz21847.

Fibre Channel (FC) interfaces that do not have a Cisco FC SFP module installed do not come up.
The switch reports:

%PORT-3-IF_UNSUPPORTED_TRANSCEIVER: Transceiver for interface fcx/y is not supported.

Kernel messages may also be displayed about GBIC-SFP checksum errors.

%KERN-3-SYSTEM_MSG: [4121386.701907] GBIC/SFP checksum error ref port:30 - kernel

The port referenced in the kernel message is based on counting from zero, hence one digit lower than the PORT error message.

Resolution

Replace the non-supported SFP with an official Cisco-supported SFP module.
