Symptoms

SyncIQ configured to use preshared key fails with error Primary authentication failed after committing the upgrade to OneFS 9.5 and later.

Does the failing policy have Password set to Yes?

# isi sync policies list -v | egrep 'Name:|Password'

Cause

When committing an upgrade to OneFS 9.5, OneFS moves the preshared key from a file (/ifs/.ifsvar/modules/tsm/passwd) to the Key Manager (KM).

Resolution

Ensure that all SyncIQ policies are in a completed state before committing the upgrade. Jobs fail if they were in progress when the password is moved during the upgrade commit.

Apply the following procedure if the commit has been run, and jobs are in a failed state due to this issue:

Workaround:

  • Re-create the preshared key file with the correct password on the target cluster (/ifs/.ifsvar/modules/tsm/passwd)
  • Run the SyncIQ job to allow it to complete successfully.
  • Remove preshared key file.
