Data Domain Capacity on Demand: HowTo extend the capacity on a DD2200 (Capacity On Demand)
Summary: This KB article explains how to complete the process for a DD2200C to be grown from the base configuration (7 disks) allowing a capacity of 4 TB post-comp to 7.5 TB post-comp through a license upgrade. The process would also be applicable to DD2200C with a base capacity of 13.18TB (7+5 disks) to be grown to the full 17.2 TB post-comp available through a similar license upgrade. ...

Instructions
First, note disk capacity is measured in TB (1,000,000,000 bytes) and file sizes and FS space is reported in TiB (2^32, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes) , hence there is approximately a 10% difference between disk capacities and FS capacities, just due to the use of different units.
A DD2200C comes by default with 7 2-TB SAS drives, with a raw capacity of approximately 14 TB. But the available FS capacity is capped to just 4 TB. However, via a COD license upgrade (Capacity on Demand) a customer can easily make the rest of the disk space available to the FS, hence having a total of approximately 7.5 TiB post-comp available for user data.
For the customer to grow the data filesystem to the larger size the process to follow is as shown below:

For the customer to grow the data filesystem to the larger size the process to follow is as shown below:
- Customer must have a DD2200C to start with, note this is not the same as a plain DD2200
- Customer must purchase a CONTROLLER-COD license from EMC, which unlocks the available raw disk capacity
- The CONTROLLER-COD license must be added to the running DD2200C , in the same way as with any other license, for example from the GUI:
# license add <license-code>
- After doing so the customer will something like the following in the output from the "df" command:
# df Active Tier: Resource Size GiB Used GiB Avail GiB Use% Cleanable GiB* ---------------- -------- -------- --------- ---- -------------- /data: pre-comp - 4420.6 - - - /data: post-comp 3795.4 2760.5 1034.9 73% 9.9 /ddvar 49.2 3.1 43.7 7% - ---------------- -------- -------- --------- ---- -------------- The Active tier can be expanded by 3.18 TiB. * Estimated based on last cleaning of 2016/03/22 06:51:13.
- Therefore, the only thing left to do to get the extra FS capacity is to expand the FS such as if new storage had been added to the system:
# filesys expand The filesystem will be expanded approximately by 3.18 TiB. Are you sure? (yes|no|?) [no]: yes ok, proceeding. ########################################### [5%] The approximate size of the filesystem is 6.95 TiB.
