AppSync: Unmount failure with error - removeRDMFromVirtualMachine Failed

Symptoms
AppSync fails to unmount a copy of a filesystem from a Virtual Machine with the following errors.
Virtual center service operation failed with error: Requested Task Failed Invalid configuration for device '0'.. Using the VI client, check the ESX servers for tasks and events, or alarms.
Virtual center service operation failed with error: removeRDMFromVirtualMachine Failed.. Using the VI client, check the ESX servers for tasks and events, or alarms.

The VMware VPXD logs did not reveal any further information.
Cause
The user had scheduled an Image Level Backup (ILB) of the mount host to run at the same time AppSync was trying to unmount the copy.
The ILB involved a VMware snapshot of the mount host, which included the RDMs.
A review of the vCenter server events history revealed the following errors at the time the AppSync unmount failed.

Task: Reconfigure Virtual Machine
Invalid configuration for device '0'.
Cannot remove virtual disk from the virtual machine because it or one of its parent disks is part of a snapshot of the virtual machine.
Resolution
Reschedule the activity so that an ILB of a host that includes RDM's is not running while AppSync is performing an unmount.
Additional Information
NetWorker was used to manage the ILB backup that was scheduled to run while AppSync Unmount as running.
