Data Domain: DD3300 Mapping disk alerts to the correct hard drive slot

Summary: On Data Domain DD3300 systems, disk failure alerts reference an enclosure and disk number (for example, Enclosure=1:Disk=18). These identifiers do not directly correspond to the physical slot numbers on the appliance. This article explains how to accurately map the alert information to the correct physical disk for replacement. ...

Instructions

The DD3300 uses a customized Dell R740xd platform where physical slot numbering starts at 0, while Data Domain software identifies disks starting at 1. This mismatch causes confusion when correlating alert data to physical disk positions.

Understand Slot Numbering Differences on the DD3300.

  • Physical slots: Start at 0.
  • Software disk IDs: Start at 1 (format: Enclosure.Disk, e.g., 1.18).

Use the below charts to establish which disk to remove based on the disk identification information provided in the alert.

FRONT DISKS (facing front of appliance)
Software ID= disk 1.1

Physical slot = 0 (zero)
Software ID= disk 1.4

Physical slot = 3
Software ID= disk 1.7

Physical slot = 6
Software ID= disk 1.10

Physical slot = 9
Software ID= disk 1.2

Physical slot = 1
Software ID= disk 1.5

Physical slot = 4
Software ID= disk 1.8

Physical slot =7
Software ID= disk 1.11

Physical slot = 10
Software ID= disk 1.3

Physical slot = 2
Software ID= disk 1.6

Physical slot =5
Software ID= disk 1.9

Physical slot = 8
Software ID= disk 1.12

Physical  slot = 11

MIDPLANE DISKS (facing from front of appliance)
Software ID= disk 1.15

Physical slot = 14
Software ID= disk 1.16

Physical slot = 15
Software ID= disk 1.17

Physical slot = 16
Software ID= disk 1.18

Physical slot = 17

REAR SSD (facing rear of appliance)
Software ID= disk 1.13

Physical slot = 12
Software ID= disk 1.14
UNUSED for DD3300
Physical slot = 13

EXAMPLE:

  •  The Data Domain operating system posted the following disk failure alert.
Severity                       CRITICAL
Class                          HardwareFailure
Object                         Enclosure=1:Disk=18
Status                         active
Message                        Unable to access a disk and the disk state is missing.
Post Additional Information    EnclosureSerialNumber=NA:DiskSerialNumber=NA:FailureCode=NA
Clear Additional Information
Event Id                       EVT-STORAGE-00002
Event Name                     DiskFailure
Description                    Unable to communicate with a disk. This disk cannot be used at this time.
  • Determine the enclosure and slot information in the alert  --> in this case,  Enclosure=1:Disk=18
  • Reference the layout tables (above) to determine which physical slot maps to the enclosure and disk slot information from the alert.
    • 1 disk 18, is located in physical slot #17.

Mapping disk alerts to the correct hard drive slot can also be done using the CLI (command-line interface).
Run the following commands to display the disk to slot-mapping information.

    # alerts show current
    # disk show hardware detailed

      # alerts show current-detailed

    Severity                       CRITICAL

Message                        Unable to access a disk and the disk state is missing.
    Post Additional Information    EnclosureSerialNumber=NA:DiskSerialNumber=NA:FailureCode=NA

    Important:

    • Do not use disk show state for physical hard drive status; it only reports virtual device states.
    • For reconstruction status, check using iDRAC.

    Optional: Use Disk Beacon.
To physically locate the disk, flash its LED - using the disks software ID (not the physical slot number):

    # disk beacon 1.18
    Press Ctrl+C to stop beaconing.
