  • An attempt to upgrade or install a newer version of code.
  • The following error message appeared when attempting a code upgrade:

Return code 0x4045001E (mismatch between actual image type and boot variable). Pre-upgrade check failed. Return code 0x40930011 (Image verification failed).

Cause

The error during precheck indicates the wrong kickstart or system image or that they are not running the command with both specified. This causes it to try to use an old and a new or one of the two.

Resolution

Use correctly formatted upgrade command or use the correct code level.

Reference bootflash: directory to ensure that the correct level of code is used.
As seen below the customer tried to use the "m9100-s5ek9..." against a switch which uses "m9100-s3ek9..."

Cisco references a bug, but that is an enhancement requesting a better error message.
The issue relates to Cisco Nexus 7k (but also MDS) install with wrong image type needs better error message.
