Avamar: The Avamar grid enters Admin Sync Mode Due to High Metadata Capacity

Summary: Avamar server enters admin sync mode due to high metadata capacity and does not revert when usage is lowered.

Symptoms

Metadata capacity containers are fully used.

Starting from Avamar version 7.1.1, if the metadata containers are full, the Avamar Server "access mode" changes to mhpu+0000+0000 (also known as sync mode).

This prevents both scheduled and manual backups initiating from the Avamar Admin UI, and incoming replication.

After correcting and lowering the Metadata Capacity level, the Avamar server access mode may still remain in mhpu+0000+0000 mode.

This behavior is likely to be experienced when adding new nodes to an Avamar grid to mitigate high Metadata Container usage levels.

Cause

This behavior is considered "as designed" by engineering.

Resolution

If following the node addition procedure, ensure that all steps are followed, as guidance is provided on how to mitigate this situation.

For node-addition type scenarios, work with Dell Support to verify the cause of the issue and identify the best way to mitigate it.

Additional Information

Note: In Avamar v7.0.x and Avamar v7.1.0, if Metadata Capacity fills up, it does not affect replication.
