VxRail: STIG Stops Responding While Copying Pre-req Script Files That Are Required for vCenter Hardening

Symptoms

The pre-requisite script files for hardening the vCenter Virtual Machine (VM) are not able to be uploaded to the vCenter VM.
When the following command is run from a separate PowerShell session, there is an error referencing the '-pw' parameter.

C:\"Program Files"\PuTTY\pscp.exe -pw [VCENTER_ROOT_PASSWORD] py/VxRailSTIGLogging.py root@[VCENTER_FQDN]:/tmp/VxRailSTIGLogging.py


Check the vCenter log, /var/log/sso/vmware-identity-sts.log, for the following errors:

2024-03-26T17:26:36.114Z ERROR sts[80:tomcat-http--43] [CorId=7221b224-e03d-46ed-937f-90a308a7ee50] [com.vmware.identity.idm.server.ServerUtils] cannot establish ldap connection with URI: [ldap://[VCENTER_FQDN]:389] because [Invalid credentials] therefore will not attempt to use any secondary URIs


 

Cause

The vCenter root password is invalid.

Resolution

Change the vCenter root password to use acceptable characters.
