Symptoms

Datastore creation fails with error:

An error occurred during host configuration. Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to create Filesystem, please see VMkernel log for more details: Failed to check device /dev/disks/eui.80931ecd24b1519e8ccf096xxxxxxxx:1 capable of ATS


ESXI logs show: 

  • vmkernel.log:
2022-01-05T19:25:26.607Z cpu40:2100041)WARNING: NvmeScsi: 172: SCSI opcode 0x85 (0x45d9915cc108) on path vmhba64:C0:T2:L43 to namespace eui.66f9071930fa9d598ccf09680xxxxxxx failed with NVMe error status: 0x1 translating to SCSI error   <--Here we see the device ID of the Volume and that is generating the SCSI sense code. 

2022-01-05T19:25:26.607Z cpu40:2100041)WARNING: H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x5 0x20 0x0   <--Here we see the NVMe error and the SCSI sense code which Indicates there is a check condition illegal request and invalid command operation code.
 
  • vmwarning.log:
2022-01-05T16:10:06.737Z cpu11:2105127)WARNING: brcmnvmefc: nvmefcGetRemotePort:2580: 1073 - Get Remote Port Failed   <----- These errors are seen streamed throughout the logs indicating a connection issue.  
 
Uploading the ESXi logs to http://10.2XX.1XX.2XX/cxxtx.html, you can search for lpfc and see the Host HBA driver and firmware version. 
lpfc    12.8.511.0-1OEM.700.1.0.15843807    EMU    VMwareCertified    2021-09-22   <--Here is the driver version of the HBAs.

Cause

Emulex HBA versions below 14.0.326.12-1OEM.700.1.0.15843807 do not support ESXi 7.0.3. Emulex added support for ESXi 7.0.3 in this latest driver upgrade. See release notes for Emulex version 14.0.321.12. 

Here is a link to the VMware compatibility guide which indicates that the only supported driver for the Emulex HBA is code 14.0.326.12.

You can also check the Emulex HBA white pages for code 14.0.326.12 which indicates it added support for ESXi 7.0.3. Below is the output from page 1 of the white pages.  

"Added support for the VMware ESXi 7.0 U3 operating system."

Resolution

Upgrade Emulex HBA driver to version 14.0.326.12.
