Symptoms

Dolby does not work in discrete mode

Alienware x15 R2 and x17 R2 laptop owners may find that Dolby does not work when you are using dedicated Graphics Processing Unit (dGPU) mode.

Dolby stops working when you switch the Dolby Digital Sound (DDS) mode to NVIDIA's dGPU mode in the NVIDIA control panel.

The Dolby icon does not appear in the upper right corner of the screen when playing videos in Netflix.

Cause

Dolby Vision only works with the default Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) mode. It does not support real-time switching to the other GPU setting. This is the expected behavior in these circumstances.

Resolution

Your laptop and software is working as designed. We recommend using the following steps to change your display mode to Optimus:

  1. Right-click the Windows Desktop.

  2. Select NVIDIA Control Panel from the menu that appears.

  3. Go to Manage Display mode.

  4. Select Optimus.

  5. Click Apply.
