How to Configure Smart Dock Zero-Touch Provisioning

Prerequisites

Ensure the following configurations are completed prior to ZTP:

1. DDMC Access
   • Tenant users with Domain Administrator level access to the Dell Device Management Console (reference Dell Device Management Console Login Fails)

   Note:

   • For ZTP, a valid Wi-Fi configuration is required when the customer environment supports Wi-Fi connectivity. If Wi-Fi is not available, the Smart Dock must be connected via a LAN cable to receive network configuration.
   • For all global security configuration details, reference the administration guide: Dell Device Management Console: Peripheral Management 1.x.
3. DHCP or DNS Configuration
   • Configure either DHCP or DNS within the customer environment to support device provisioning, reference How to Create and configure DNS SRV and TXT Records for Dell Device Management Console

     • For DNS configuration, reference How to Create and configure DNS SRV and TXT Records for Dell Device Management Console
4. Firewall Requirements

   Note: For the Dell Pro Smart Dock to function correctly, configure your proxy settings to exempt the DDMC FQDNs from SSL interception. This configuration prevents the proxy from replacing the original certificate in server responses.
5. Optional: Manual/Automatic Order Retrieval
   Reference: How to Retrieve Devices into the Dell Device Management Console (DDMC)
   1. Sign in to: https://device.manage.dell.com
   2. Go to Dashboard > Settings > Manage Order Retrieval
   3. Select Manual Order Retrieval.
   4. Enter the email id listed on the order for the Smart Dock to retrieve.
   5. Click Submit

ZTP Step execution and Validation

Once all prerequisites have been completed, users may proceed with the Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) enrollment process. reference the video and step-by-step instructions below for detailed guidance.

Validation steps:

1. Connect Ethernet to the Smart Dock.
2. Power cycle the Smart dock
3. Observe the Smart-dock Cloud LED indicator.
4. Note: When an ethernet cable is connected to the Smart Docks RJ45 port, the device:

   • Sends its MAC address to DHCP/DNS
   • Requests and obtains an IP address
   • Retrieves the provisioning URL

LED Status Indicators

• Blinking: 1 second ON, 1 second OFF (twice): Device is connecting to the network and has obtained IP and provisioning details.
• Blinking: 3 second ON, 1 second OFF: Device is attempting to register with DDMC over LAN.
  Note: This continues until successful registration.
• Solid White LED:
  • Device is successfully connected to Wi-Fi
  • Wireless policy has been applied
  • Smart Dock is fully provisioned and manageable using DDMC

Verification

A successfully provisioned Smart Dock:

• Connects to Wi-Fi automatically
• Appears in the Dell Device Management Console
• Is ready for centralized management
