VNXe: How to Shut down the system (power down) (User Correctable)

Instructions

Shutting down the system with this method shuts down the storage system without putting storage processors (SPs) into Service mode, and does not require an SP boot. When the system is powered back up, the SPs come up in the same mode that they were in when the system was shut down.

You need to shut down the Storage Processors (SPs) to prepare the system for physical relocation or a planned power outage.

CAUTION!
This procedure involves shutting down the SPs. When all SPs are down, all I/O services stop and hosts lose access to the system. When one or both SPs become available to the system, I/O services to hosts will resume.

Prerequisites
Before performing this procedure, it is recommended that you disconnect all network shares and iSCSI virtual disks from each host to prevent data loss. When the system is fully powered up, you can reconnect the hosts to these storage resources.

Shut down the system

The shutdown process can take between 25 to 45 minutes to complete. During this time, the connection to the system will be lost and you will not have access to Unisphere or the online help.

It is important that you print the power up instructions on this page to be sure you have all of the information you need to power up the system. When Unisphere is not available, you can go to the EMC Online Support website to locate product documentation.

1. From Unisphere, select Settings > Service System.


2. Enter the Service password to access the Service System page.


3. Under Service Actions, select Shut Down System.


4. Click Execute service action to shut down the storage processors (SPs).


5. In the Service Confirmation dialog box, click OK.


6. Check the status of the shutdown process by looking at the SP LED indicators:
 
a. On VNXe3100 and VNXe3150 systems, the shutdown process is complete when only the Storage Processor Power LEDs are blinking and all other Storage Processor LEDs are off. 


b. On VNXe3300 the shutdown process is complete when all of the Storage Processor LEDs are off.


7. If you are relocating hardware, disconnect cables in the following order:
 
a. Disconnect the power cables from disk-processor enclosure (DPE) to power down the SPs.


b. Disconnect the power cable from the DAEs to power them down.


Power up the system

To power up a system that is fully powered down:
 
1. Reconnect the power cables to each DAE in the following exact order:
1. DAE 0
2. DAE 1
3. DAE 2
 
2. Power up any remaining DAEs in ascending order.

The green Power Status LED powerlines.gif on each DAE turns on. For more information on the LEDs, see System LED displays.

3. Reconnect the power cables to each SP in exactly this order:
 
1. SP A
2. SP B

The green Power Status LED on each SP turns on.

4. The SPs come up in the same mode that they were in when the system was shut down. If a single SP comes up in Service Mode, in Unisphere, you need to reboot the SP to return it to Normal Mode. See Reboot a Storage Processor.

If both storage processors (SP) reboot in Service Mode, you will need to Power-cycle the system manually.

5. When both SPs are in Normal Mode, refresh your browser or follow the on-screen instructions, to bring the system software out of Service Mode and restore Unisphere to full functionality.
