Dell PowerEdge M830 (For Dell PowerEdge VRTX Enclosure) Owner's Manual

Removing a server module

Prerequisites

CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
  1. Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions section.
  2. Follow the procedure listed in the Before working inside your system section.
  3. If installed, remove the front bezel from the PowerEdge VRTX enclosure.

  4. Turn off the server module using the operating system commands or the CMC, and ensure that the server module is turned off.

When a server module is turned off, its front-panel power indicator is off.

Steps

  1. Press the release button on the server module handle.
  2. Pull the server module handle to unlock the server module from the enclosure.
CAUTION: If you are permanently removing the server module, install a server module blank(s). Operating the system for extended periods of time without a server module blank installed can cause the enclosure to overheat.
  3. Slide the server module out of the enclosure.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the I/O connectors, do not touch connectors or the connector pins.
CAUTION: To protect the I/O connector pins, install the I/O connector covers every time a server module is removed from the enclosure.
  4. Install the I/O connector cover over the I/O connector.
