How to Clear the BIOS Password


BIOS Password Overview


The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is the program that controls the computer from startup to the time the BIOS loads the operating system.
Some BIOS programs allow you to create a password that is not accessible from the operating system. This BIOS password (system setup password) must be entered during startup before the computer will even load the operating system. If you forget your password, you may not be able to operate your computer or change BIOS settings until you clear the forgotten password.

Clear the BIOS Password

Before you perform any of the procedures in this section, read and follow the safety instructions in Dell Knowledge Base Article: Precautionary Measures for Personal Safety

For a notebook computer, you will need to get assistance to clear a BIOS password by contacting Dell technical support.

To reset a BIOS password for your Desktop computer, open the computer and remove the password jumper from the system board (Figure 1).

Position of the password reset jumper may vary. Refer to the Service Manual for your Dell computer.

Refer to your system's User Guide for detailed instructions on removing the password jumper.

Once you have the manual for your computer, In the PDF document, scroll-down to the section Clearing CMOS Settings and follow the instructions in the manual.
