Area-51 R2, upgrade to new generation
Hi everyone.
i'm new in this forum, but i've my Alienware since 1,5 years and i would like to upgrade my PC to play in 4k on games like Star Citizen for example.
My actual configuration is:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6850k CPU @ 3.60Ghz
Installed memory (RAM)_ 16.00 Gb (15.9 usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070
Is it possible to switch to a RTX 2080 and to a Intel i9 k series without change motherboard or other stuff?
if possible, can please share me the correct link and where to buy this?

Thanks for your reply, I need just that upgrade, is it possibile to upgrade without change motherboard? Can I upgrade to an i9 and to a RTX 2080, I just want to know this. Thanks for you time!

Are you saying you have an Alienware Area-51 R2 (the first triad-case looking model)?
And what 4K display do you have?
Actually, with that nice GTX-1070 ... my guess is that it will game at 4K-resolutions acceptably.

I don't know about CPU (nor do you need it).
The RTX-2080 should work (because):
- Area51-R2 is UEFI-based
- Area51-R2 has 850w PS
- Area51-R2 normally has room for larger cards.

Your R2 is X99 chipset socket 2011-v3 Haswell-E | Broadwell-E, top chips:
U can't run newer Skylake-X X299 skt 2066 7thGen (7800x - 7980xe etc) chips unless u do R4 / R5 mthrbrd swap, see AndrewSi Upgrade Motherboard 51 R2
No one here has done this swap that I'm aware of, it appears you may need the parts below, here's a step in right direction, call / chat Dell Sales for some parts:
When X299 Basin Falls Refresh socket 2066 9th Gen (example: 9800x - 9980xe) is offered on the sales page - which should be soon - it will be the R8, probably w/ a new (perhaps 'revised') R8 mthbrd (+ new part#), & R4 R5 owners may get a Bios update to run those newest Gen9 Intel chips. For now, the R4 R5 mthrbrds can only run Gen7, those owners await a Bios update for Gen9 & then only if the Aliens publish one for them as a courtesy
Tip: an R8 Gen9 mthrbrd (which is not a reality yet) typically will not be available for sale until about 4-6 months after 'launch' (***launch has not happened yet)
Note: All Gen9 prices increase > ex. 9800x ~$600, old 7800x ~$380
AMD swap
R3 board (1st Threadripper) = 8FN1W
R6 Case Revision board may be part# XF4NJ
R7 newer 2nd TRip part# unknown by me (may be currently unavailable?)
*requires x1 USB cable (27J7M or 0NX92)(or similar / consult Dell)
***New R3 R4 R5 R6 R7 Rx mthrbrds direct from Dell can be ultra-pricey
I have no more information & do not own your desktop anymore; members here or on Arena will have to help u out
6900k or 6950x CPU is also an option ... ... ...

Hi, I don't know what you decided on, but I have the area 51R2 and you don't need to swap motherboards to play 4K. I have the I7-5960x paired with the Evga 1080ti ftw3 and it plays 4K pretty good. I am thinking of getting the 2080 super when it comes out soon and possibly NV link them, but point is you don't need to worry about upgrading the motherboard just pop in either the I7-5820k, I7-5960x, I7-6850k, and the I7-6950x tops and any of those can be paired with the newest GPU's and play 4k. Personally, I'd go with the I7-5960x or the I7-6950x because they can handle more load.

New thermal pad (graphite) and overclock your proc to 4.3-4.4. You can get the newer 5960 but remember the lower clock speeds. Its not always about the load but the clock speed. 4K/VR works great on your system. I have a 1080TI right now and love it. Stay away from 2080 cards... just skip one generation since its not worth the 20% and the RTX technology is not heavily used.
