Just curious, when you reset the BIOS it is possible that the BIOS went back to RAID from AHCI or vice versa. If that happened then the system would indeed not boot.
Thanks for the shout about the memory, it turns out that is the problem as it boots fine with the old memory. For reference the new memory is HX426C16FB3K4/64 which Kingston claim is compatible, so I will go back to them.

Hello you can go into the bios and load defaults. It usually solves this problems. What memory did you installed ??
Memory it´s very picky in this systems, the problem can be related to the memory also.

Setting in BIOS was intel smart response technology, which I think is the correct setting
