Aurora R10, memory upgrade

Hi, I have ordered a R10 with the 3700x, RTX 2070 super and 16GB of RAM. If I remember correctly it’s the hyperX fury 2666Mhz.

Since I’ll be doing video editing I wanted to get the 32GB 3200Mhz but the cost of doing so on the Dell website  was significantly more than ordering the same RAM on Amazon...

I would like to order the RAM and I’m wondering if any 2X16GB 3200Mhx XMP kit work? Orb do you have recommendations for this Ryzen system? I found a couple of list for the other R systems but not specific to this motherboard so I would assume what is recommended/tested would be different.

And if that matters in your answer I actually don’t do much gaming at the moment but mainly video editing. I’m thinking 32GB would be enough for now but might consider getting another 32GB of the same memory later if needed. I had a look at the manual and it seems 4x16GB XMP would work.

Not really. It depends on the mobo and bios. I built a new system with Ryzen 5800x, Asus ProArt B550 with Oloy 32GB x 2 (64GB) 3600Mhz.  It is running without any issue. 3466 Mhz speed setting is not the typical module you would find on the market.

If your building your own system you can use whatever you want.   If you have a Alienware aurora r10 3466 is the best at this time

For Alienware R10's it's 1,733 Mhz. This was extensively tested by another user who had initially issues with his system not being stable at 3,400 Mhz.

They don't have a divider option to set it lower, or an option to change the fabric speed.

Based on reading some in this thread, I'm going to try out some Mushkin 3466 ram I found that looks to be a bit cheaper than the HyperX and a few others...

I just ordered this tonight and will report back on it's performance and workability.  I'm crossing my fingers!!

So vibe seems to be if you have a modern 5000 series ryzen R10 then your best bet is with the HyperX Fury Black 32GB 3466MHz DDR4 CL17 DIMM HX434C17FB4K2/32

https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-Black-3466MHz-HX434C17FB4K2-32/dp/B089QSG4S9/

The Crucial ones have worked for previous versions but the latest R10 ryzen 5000 series is more compatible with the above.

Sound about right?

There has always been something odd with the timings on these Ryzen 5000 machines.

I noticed from several other users posting screen shots their actual reported timings under CPU-Z are not matching the timing tables in any of the memory modules XMP profiles.

It's often shows as 22-22 instead of 20-20.

I am not sure why, but I am speculating this was done to allow the validated DDR 3400 memory to run stable at DDR 3466. You would typically increase the timings if you overclock memory, to increase your chances of getting it stable at higher unsupported frequencies.

To my knowledge DELL does not sell validated DDR 3466 memory. Only up to DDR 3400 has been validated. That's going by the stickies at the top of this board for the R10 and R12 configurations.

Ok, got the Mushkin Mem in.  Here's the deal, 5900 (non x), RTX 3090, machine bought to mine crypto and play games...  Here's the default 16gb HyperX ram from dell vs the Mushkin 3466 (which isn't running at rated speed, btw).  PassMark shows the Mushkin runs faster, but CPUZ says it's not running at the 1733, only 1700ish.  I am not sure why.  If I try to manually set the values in the bios for voltage, 1733, etc (accounting for hex vs dec input at all), then the machine won't post at 1733.   But no problems with OC1 for mushkin.

Oddity:  When using better hash, and tweeking vid card speeds, I max out around 122.xx mh/s with the Dell memory, and only 121.xx mh/s with the Mushkin.  So something is making video card hashing slower even through the other numbers and benchmarks say the ram is faster.  Not sure if I should just return this and spend the extra money on the HyperX  3466 memory listed otherwise, or heck, just buy 3200 ram and start over my trials.  Anyway, thought this might be helpful for anyone NOT mining but wanting faster mem.  Thoughts?

Really interesting.

Just clicked buy on the 3466MHz RAM

Should I have opted for the 3600 instead?

@Jaxsonnz I have some 3600 ram in my other machine I'll try out today and test.  Just because it's posting with it doesn't mean it will work better.  I'll post some results later today... I still have to try out the current ram with the new bios also, to see if the timings or speed comes out different.  And just when we thought we knew what was happening.... boom! start over!  LOL

There is apparently a new bios out that, as per some user reports, seems to enable 3,600 Mhz memory support on the Ryzen 5000 R10's.

That is considered the sweet spot for memory speed versus performance for a Ryzen machine.

The only issue I can see popping up is that this would require a fabric speed of 1,800 Mhz to work at a 1:1 ratio.

If it is achieved with a divider you will not get the anticipated performance and you will be better off with a fabric speed of 1,733 Mhz and DDR 3,466 Mhz, as that is a 1:1 ratio.

I also have not seen any updates on the validated memory configurations for the R10, and you would typically need those to ensure there's validated memory available.

We will have to wait until someone has this enabled on their R10 machine to see how it is achieved. (divider or increase in fabric speed)

I'll have to take a look with Cpu-Z.   Definitely better performance via user benchmark and in game performance.
