Actually I think the flagship is rumored to be the 3090, which requires 3 x 8 pin power cables (instead of the previously rumored new 12 pin).

The 1000w psu option should satisfy that aspect, your other limitation is physical - size, you'll need to find one thay fits in the small aurora case.  Info on size is not available yet but you can expect a range of designs of different sizes.

Hmm ok. Guess this can’t really be answered until release date then.. Sept 1st I believe.

Also what pins does the current Alienware R11 have?

Man have I been waiting for the RTX 30xx release.

I couldn't wait any more, and upgraded my Aurora R5 GTX 970 to the Aurora R11 RTX 2070 Super (i9 10900k) a month ago, with the idea of upgrading to the RTX 3080 when released. (so much better!)

The R11 has (2) 8-pins available for the GPU, so the 3080 should be fine as it should only need 2.  If the 3080ti needs (3) then ?.

Also, I would think a blower-style would be the best choice?  To vent the hot air out of the back of the case, rather than an open fan design that will dump the hot air into the case.

Sounds like a Sept 1 announcement with Sept 17 shipping release?

There are two different PSU options for the R11 so it would depend on which one you have.

Yes. Sounds good.

I’m considering getting the R11 with 2080 Ti. Then either getting another 2080 Ti as it should be cheaper by then or upgrading to the 30 series. But guess we need to wait and see if it is 2 pin on Sept 1st to know this?

Also if I did add another 2080 Ti would it need to be identical to the existing Alienware card? Or as long as it has 2 pins, can it be any card? Also, I’m having trouble finding anywhere that sells 2080 Ti blower cards. Nightmare.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Ah I see. Would be going for the 1000w. So should be ok.

Two different options? I would go for liquid cooling. Is that what you mean? Thanks.

The 500w psu option has two 8pin (or equivalent) connectors.

The 1000w psu option has four 8pin (or equivalent) connectors.

Going by techpowerup.com they have dimensions of the 3080 which if are correct at 267mm in length it will fit the r11 case ok as I measured it to take up to a max 280mm before it hits the front case fan. However the flagship 3090 is supposedly around 308mm so it will be to long for the case, unless remove the front case fan but don’t think that would be recommended.

@Davie48 Sadly upon checking the full specs of the RTX 3080 on the webpage, it is 285mm in length. *sighs*

I bought my R11 with the intention of upgrading the GPU to RTX 3000 series, so this is extremely frustrating. I'm wondering if I might swap the existing front case fan with a slimmer one (existing one is 25mm thick)... if I can save 5-10mm then it may be possible. I don't know if there are any slim 15mm fans that can provide good enough air flow - ideally I don't want to make the already precarious cooling situation any worse...

Anybody else wanting to upgrade had any thoughts on this?

Yeah I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. Currently I'm thinking two things:

1) Dell/Alienware announced today that they will be selling Aurora with “custom-engineered graphics card options with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs", so I'm guessing they will either extend the aurora case or make the card shorter. If they do make a slightly shorter version of the card, I wonder if we would be able to purchase it from them as a standalone item (though I doubt it).

2) Rather than going for a slim fan, which I think may be a bad idea after further reading, I'll see if it would be possible to move the existing fan forwards. There is a lot of redundant material in front of it, so I think this could work, but it might get a bit messy with cutting through the internal casework.

I’m in the same situation as well. Would it be better just to transfer the Alienware innards to a new case? Is that even possible ?

Just remove that front fan altogether IMO for the 80

The card looks like it’ll have great cooling already and if you keep it stock, you’ll be fine

They'll probably extend the case. I wouldnt risk removing a fan. I'll probably just save up for another aurora system with the 3090. I have the aurora r11 and love it so far. I need another computer for the living room anyway.
