Aurora R12, won't stay powered on

My Aurora R12 won’t power on this morning. When I press the power button, it lights up for a quick second, there is a click inside, and it immediately powers down. It’s on for maybe 2 seconds.

it worked fine last night. Nothing has changed. Cables are secure, I unplugged the tower from the UPS, power cycled the UPS, plugged the tower back in, still won’t power up.

Same problem here, mine just updated last night. Clicks on, Alienware logo blinks yellow, shuts off and tries again. Battery removal doesn't work. Apparently not everyone's is updating at the same time or something. I want a technician sent out to fix this mess that they caused. This is utterly unacceptable, and maybe even class action law*suit (they don't allow that word here, cripes?) worthy. I had automatic updates on, so they are 100% at fault. Alienware R12.

I am having the same problem! After powering down the PC it will not power back on. It powers on for a split second, maybe clicks, and then shuts off. It does this over and over. I have tried several troubleshooting steps and have concluded that the motherboard is dead. (I've been building, fixing, and troubleshooting PC's for 15 years). Now that I have read through this thread, I remember shortly before this happened, I installed some Windows Updates and I recall seeing an Alienware update included in there. (I'm assuming it is the BIOS update people are referring to) I have ruled out the PSU bcuz I disconnected it and hooked up a brand new PSU, same exact thing happens. I also reset BIOS by removing CMOS battery. I removed all 4 RAM sticks and reseated just 1 stick in Slot 1. I held the test button on the Dell PSU and tried powering on; fans spin and things light up, but no picture on the screen. I even put a different GPU in and nothing changed.

I just think the PSU fried the board. Dont ever use their Power supplies again.

No. As stated previously, my motherboard was replaced under warranty by Dell. That was the solution. All of the other solutions mentioned in this thread were not solutions for my problem.

Same problem here - R12 aurora rtx 3080 purchased dec 2020. PC was working fine and then last night black screen on launch of applications no DP display. Updated bios and graphics cards, dell tech did all tests clear except video stress test where black screen occurred. Now I cant get the PC to boot to windows, i power up the pc I get flashing lights first red then rainbow of colors and then just blue/green and hangs with black screen, nothing happening totally bricked. Dell technicians say sorry for the inconvenience but they are working on a solution.

I have premium support plan and they still are giving me no options. Beyond frustrated with the customer service.

Yeah, that's the solution I mentioned on page 1 of this thread.  It is only for the PC clicking and turning off immediately (no power whatsoever to anything). That comes up on occasion and has been the usual fix.

However the blackscreen no display, but powering up is an entirely different issue.  The PSU test button + power button only works when the power button doesn't work. It won't do anything for people reporting booting to and hanging on a black screen. That is an entirely different issue.  People with different symptoms should start a new thread.

Yes, I did try this. Holding the button on the PSU causes the system to power on and fans spin and the lights turn on, but when u press the power button, the alien head lights up for about a second and then turns off. The fans are still spinning, but the computer is not on. It does this over and over, the power button only staying lit for a second and then turning off. Prolly will have the motherboard replaced soon.

My mistake, it’s a motherboard fault.

Tech came out today and replaced my motherboard. PC is fully functional now. Yay!

I bought my Alienware Aurora r12 last a year and then 1 week after warranty expired, I am experiencing this same issue. Was working fine, then I left it for an hour to go to a class. When I got back it was off. It will not power up completely--ONLY the light on the back turns green when I press the power button AND I can see a white light emanating through the vents on the left side. I can also hear a soft clicking or whirling sound but not the fans aren't turning on. I don't hear the normal noise that I would usually hear. It doesn't actually power on, but if I push the power button again, the noise stops and the green and white light turns off. Is this similar to what you all are seeing? Tech Support says it is the motherboard. I have to wait a week for someone to come out. In the meanwhile hoping for guidance on other things I can try. I already did everything tech support suggested. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I have the same issue and mine is 4 days after the warranty expired. I've had it just over a year. However I was able to hit shift and power power button and it took me to a settings screen. I'm not sure what I need to do in there. I was going to do a complete reset. But there was not a button for reset. I've tried all the things mentioned above. Before it completely went to this mode it said trying to trouble shoot then something like unable to trouble shoot. It happened after the update. Has anyone else found a solution? Thanks in advance

The issue described by the OP has just happened to me.  Exact same system: Alienware Aurora R12 purchased 16 months ago.  Everything was working just fine until I had the brilliant idea to check the Dell website for potential updates.  I can only imagine that the BIOS update bricked my computer as it won't stay on.  After pushing the power button I hear a click as it would power on normally and then it immediately turns off.  This has to be bad SW being pushed down by Dell!

As I predicted, because my machine is now out of warranty, the only solution to my bricked machine is, you guessed it, PAID support...  In other words, I have to pay to have my machine looked at, and will have to pay for replacing the MoBo...

Dell is not getting my money ever again - it looks like running out of warranty sort of gives them the right to push a bad firmware to customers' machines and get away with it...
