Dell Support replied as well with the following explanation and manual reference:
"...please refer to page 10 on the service manual below to identify the fans correctly.

Mid fan = bottom front (3)
top fan = top fan (1)
side fan = cpu cooler fan (4)
front fan = top front (2)

Hello friend,
Any reference or evidence as to how you came to figure this out? Just curious since I have not been able to locate any info on this, and you cant turn the fans off completely from the command center.

In AWCC I just turned each fan to 100% and checked the airflow to see which fan was at 100% lol. Not tooooo scientific of course, but it's accurate.
