Aurora R13, installing Windows 11 on a new, unformatted SSD

I'm trying to install Windows 11 on a new, unformatted SSD in an Alienware Aurora R13 desktop, booting from a USB drive running Dell Recovery and Restore. The BIOS sees the drive but Dell Recovery and Restore does not see the drive.

Am I using the correct tool for a clean install on an unformatted drive?

Thanks.

Make sure drive is set to AHCI and not RAID.

I would also use installation media directly from Microsoft rather than Dell: Microsoft Windows 11 Media

It's a 2TB Samsung PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. I don't see any drive-specific settings for M.2 SSD's in the BIOS.

Well first of all, AFAIK, DBaR has been depreciated for Windows-11. For Windows-11, I thought you only used Microsoft's tools.

The BIOS setting for AHCI/RAID might be under SATA:

On Dell/Alienware, SATA options reportedly seem to affect PCIe drives (like NVMe SSDs)
- I think because all drives need to be accessed one way or the other, so...
Set to AHCI (recommended). Microsoft's drivers will be used (and they work fine).

Yes, I've found that starting with an un-formatted, un-partitioned, un-initialized, raw SSD works best:

- Install Windows to the un-allocated space.
Walk through any prompts and let computer reboot as required.
- The Installer will automatically Initialize the drive as GPT, partition appropriately, and format as NTFS for you

The one thing you don't mention is are you looking for a clean install or setting the new drive to a factory configuration with the Dell Software included?

See the service manual: R13 service manual

SATA/NVME Operation Sets the operating mode of the integrated storage device controller.

Default: RAID on

With RAID mode set to on you will not be able to see any drive unless you manually add the proper RAID driver during Pre-installation of the OS.

That's why I would highly recommend to simply switch from RAID to AHCI mode, since RAID in a gaming PC has little effect unless you are doing something like 2 x M2 drives in RAID 1 mode. Even then I would not recommend it without a proper backup strategy in place.
