Aurora R13, won't boot anymore

Have had my R13+3080ti system for a few months.

In the beginning i had the normal black screen, reboot issues that were resolved with the latest firmware update.

Last night i left the PC on and when i came in this morning the machine was humming like it was on but the screen, keyboard and mouse LEDS were all off so i thought it had crashed.

Turns out i cant boot the machine anymore. When i turn the machine off and back on, the Alienthead briefly flashes, the fans go on and then nothing happens. The fans continue to run but the peripherals dont light up and there is no POST process. Just the fans humming. I took a video of it here:

Also of note is that when i hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off, it turns back on immediately.

Now i have premium 24/7 support and after 10 calls? to dell i get a message to say that they have technical difficulties and to try again later. Not good enough tbh. Now im back to my old and rock solid Alienware Area51.

I doubt it's the power supply as far as 750w goes.  I'm running a EVGA 3080ti FTW3 Ultra on the 750w supply.  I have it undervolted right now, but at stock settings it runs w/o psu issues.

I am facing exactly the same problem.

I ususally put my PC to sleep and one day it just goes totally no respond with the power button.

Then it can wake up but no response from keyboard nor monitor after unplug and replug the power cord.

Now waiting for the technician to come too, he could only bring a motherboard to change...hope it's not the problem of my 3080ti...

Ok so its the 2nd time a technician has come. This time he swapped the video card, swapped the PSU and the motherboard (again) and the machine is dead.

Lights come on the front but no peripheral gets power, nor does the monitor show anything on both DP and HDMI.

To conclude the visit he just told me he doesnt know what to do and he will enquire with Dell.

Im at a loss as to how i escalate this but a) i want/should get a new PC at this stage b) i need my data

Really upsetting

So they changed motherboard but still won't work? Or did it worked for a while then down again?

I have been waiting for dell's motherboard for few days too.

This sounds bad...I am in exactly same situation to you and they are not even able to send an engineer because "parts are out of stock"... did they tell you how long you have to wait?

Didnt work at all. So only remaining factors are cpu, memory and nvme i guess but now the PC has to go to a service centre. Waiting for a pickup confimation

So the story continues.

I called Dell yesterday to complain about the technician that just left, told me that he had no clue what to do and then closed the service request. Dell have organized a courier to pick up the device as they wont replace it. Here is what was delivered to me today. This is the box that the device is supposed to fit in. For a faulty machine that will not be replaced and that has premium 24/7 support and as a customer of dell since 2000,am i supposed to also buy packaging?! Im also supposed to get the data off the nvme drive that i cant as i dont have a working PC. This is ajokedell-box.jpg

Before the pickup happens i have to backup my data as they will wipe the disk and reinstall win11. So i order an external nvme drive cradle with the hope that i get my data off.

I removed the drive, installed it in the cradle and attached it to my work laptop (only other device i have). Guess what? drive was not recognisable. Tried it on another laptop and also not recognisable.

Then i wondered what would happen if i booted the PC without the drive installed.

Now i get a service error code saying that the heat sink clip is not installed with a QR code.

The power button is flashing amber in the following sequence 1 x amber then a pause then 4 x amber then a pause then 7 x amber.

BUT, at least i am getting video output (from HDMI only. DP doesnt work).

I then inserted the nvme drive again and the again the system has no video output or power to the peripherals. So it may well be that the nvme drive is the culprit. I dont have another one to test with. I only have normal SSD drives.

Please assist me to troubleshoot further. This may also help some of the other users with issues and i wont have to send the pc off for 10 days

That error code is related to the VRM heat sinks that are installed when the system is ordered with liquid cooling. If you order it with air cooling it does not come with the VRM heat sinks.

Can't see in the picture if you have the VRM heat sinks or not.

It has water cooling. COuld it be because the technician removed and reinstalled the CPU and fan?

If i follow the QR code is comes up with an error that it cant find the information

I added a 2.5" SSD to the device. Skipped the error message about the heat-sink and i can now get to the BIOS. Im just setting up a USB device so i can install win11 on the PC and then ill report my results.

There is a fan connection when using air, and a pump connection when using liquid cooling.

I would check it is plugged into the correct header.

The VRM heat sinks are 2 pieces of black aluminum heat spreaders mounted right around the CPU socket. They are held in with screws and make contact with the motherboard ground. If you use liquid cooling the BIOS checks for that ground connection during POST. If it does not detect that ground it will throw that error thinking you have no VRM heat sinks installed.

See these pictures for the connections and VRM heat sinks: R13 service manual

If im correct those 2 heatsinks are the North and Southbridge? as far as i can remember Alienware never liquid cooled them, only with Thermal paste on motherboard.

Im trying to find it. I took the cpu off and checked it was secure and it looks ok. Sorry to aso but are these heatsink under the cpu cover? Or around it?

thanks

No, the 2 heat sinks in questions are for the VRM section. (Voltage Regulator section). That's why they are close to the CPU because the VRM section is always put closest to the CPU.
