Aurora R3, GTX 1660, no boot

Hello everyone,

I just today purchased a nVidia GTX 1660 for my Alienware Aurora R3. I installed it and powered on the system to be met with BIOS loading, however that was as far as the system went. I was then met with the diagnostic beeps, 6 in total which I believe indicated a GPU Failure. Computer still runs fine with the old card.

Has anyone successfully upgraded their R3 with a 1660 or newer model of card? Thankfully I can return the card if all else fails though would like to see what my other options are if any.

I already went ahead and reset the CMOS but that did not seem to work. BIOS is up to A06 which is the last version I believe for the R3.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Of all the Aurora models ... the Aurora-R3 was always the most finicky ... a sometimes quirky machine. Be happy yours works 100% (still).

Like other machines released around that year, it didn't appear to be 100% UEFI . Maybe just a pre-final version of it?

IIRC, someone posted that new Nvidia cards only work in (real, 100%) UEFI machines.

Can you test the GTX-1660 in another computer?

I'd like to know the outcome of this, as I am wanting to upgrade my R3's graphics card, thanks.

Hopefully, they will answer.

I suggest you stick with (still awesome) last-gen Nvidia cards like GTX-1060/1070/1080.

Pascal based GT 10XX series work fine in All Dells including Older models from as early as 2005 with PCI-E 2.0 bus.  Models with PCI-E 1.0 bus DO NOT WORK with Newer NVIDIA or ATI cards. The unit in the video is a Model Code DXP051  (Dimension 9150 / XPS 400) system from 2005 with pentium D840.

GDDR5 based GT1030 cards work in most Dells including SFF models due to only using 40W max.   DDR4 based GT1030 cards should be avoided.

Agreed, have probably decided on a GTX 1070 due to power limitations (I have the 525W PSU). I will need to buy a 6-to-8 pin converter and need to stay under 75W (bus) +75W (6pin) total 150W. (I currently have 2x GTX450 in SLI that came with the machine.)

From Nvidea:
1080 TI card is 250W (recommend 600W PSU)
1080    card is 180W (recommend 500W)
1070 TI card is 180W (recommend 500W)
1070    card is 150W (recommend 500W)
1060-6GB  card is 120W (recommend 400W)
1060-3GB  card is 120W (recommend 400W)
1050 TI  card is 75W (recommend 300W)
1050-3GB card is 75W (recommend 300W)
1050-2GB card is 75W (recommend 300W)

Strange they let you config and buy a Nvidia SLI config with only the 525w-PS.

525w and 850w PS both use same wiring hardness. I thought at least one of the 6pin+2pin worked on both.

I'm going by the information looked up by my service code. Too much effort to actually disassemble the machine so that I can reach the PSU specs sticker (though I'll take another look when I get home, just in case).

V3VHG  1  MODULE, CHASSIS, STANDARD, MBK, 525, AUR3

2x GTS450, each rated 106W according to the NVidia website.

In case anyone reads this thread in the future, I am very happy to report that my brand new EVGA GeForce GTX1070 Graphics Card 8GB GDDR5 Black Edition is working with my Alienware Aurora R3.

Hello, Hope I'm not too late to get your help.  I'm also trying to upgrade my R3 from the stock Amd 6870 to a GTX GPU.  I was wondering if this was a simple plug and play with existing power harness, or did you need any converters or other modifications.

Any ATI Drivers should be UNISTALLED BEFORE putting the NVIDIA card in.

If the power supply supports the card there are no wiring issues.

However You can only use a card that needs 2 6 pin connector or 1 8 pin max with a 525w power supply.

You cant install a 300W card that has 1 6 pin and 1 8 pin.

These older models DO NOT SUPPORT UEFI NVIDIA RTX series cards nor do they support RADEON R3 R5 R7 R9 series cards.

Thanks. My R3 has 875 psu.  Will this GPU work without issue with bios or power?

I would NOT try.

Like the suggestions for the Aurora-R1 and R2, I suggest you stick with (still awesome) last-gen Nvidia cards like GTX-1060/1070/1080 for the Aurora-R3.

I can report that I was able to successfully install a legacy PNY 1060 GPU in my R-3 without any problem.  I also replaced the oem 8gb Ram with 16 GB Corsair and my R-3 is humming along better than ever.  Nice to play newer games with good frame rates, as my AMD 6870 could no longer keep up.

After installing my EVGA 1070 successfully (using the existing 6+2 power cord that came with my 525W power supply), I had the opportunity to test a Gigabyte 1660 GTX. I can report that this card FAILED on my Aurora R3. It would only boot far enough to show the big Alienware logo, but it would not go into the BIOS (F2) nor the Boot Options (F12) even though it acknowledged that I had pressed F2/F12 but making the F2/F12 text bright white.

so the math is easy

106x 2 is 212w, and the new card is 120watts, why do you worry 120watt 1660, 92 watts less gaming.

and guess what it uses 10watt to boot(card), so did you connect up all GPU AUX cables?

i can not figure that.?

the card you bought if new, (was it new in a sealed box) should run

but if  2014 , the VBIOS then was JUNK !
