Aurora-R7, can I upgrade the RAM

Hello folks I have the new Alienware Aurora r7 with 64gb. Since I am a video creator, I need even more RAM. Can I upgrade the stock RAM from 64gb to 128gb? If so where can I procure the additional 64gb?

Thanks

Hi @pkirangi,

This system has 4x DDR4 slots and we just have up to 16GB modules.

So the maximum validated RAM is 64GB, more RAM hasn't been validated, therefore, we can't confirm functionality.

If you want to run 2 DIMMs (in one memory bank) so it can not only be double the amount but also dual-channel fast-speed ... they need to match EXACTLY.

Unless you are very knowledgeable and resourceful, this will be next to impossible with just one current generic DIMM.

Your best bet will be to start-over and buy your new memory in Matched Pairs.

For others reading this before purchase, it's much easier to just go ahead and buy your Alienware with pairs of DIMMs in the quantity you need now (and about a year into the future).

Also, for those buying Aurora R6-R7 ... do yourself another favor and just go ahead and spring for the 850watt Power-Supply and Liquid Cooler (especially if getting any Intel-i7 processor).

A bit late to this party, but I did order my R7 (and got the liquid cooling and higher wattage) and while I only ordered it with 16GB (2x8GB) memory right now, I intend to add another 16GB (2x8GB) sometime soon.  Am I right in assuming that because I will be ordering a pair (so they will match) to fit in the other empty slots I'm good to go (as long as it's DDR4-2666)?  What I mean is I do understand they need to match the dual slots they occupy, and since the first two will match (ordered from Dell) and the next two I buy (most likely from Dell as their prices are good right now) will match each other I am not slowing things down any (I only ask because it's just *slightly* possible I could change the order before it ships -- it may be past that cutoff now).

If I wanted 32GB (2X16GB) of ram would you recommend I buy it preinstalled or install it myself? Installing it myself would be cheaper but I don't know if there are any downsides to this. What speed would you recommend? I heard that there is a max that the Aurora R7 motherboard will allow.

You can buy 2 sticks of 16gb 2666 ram from Dell (that matches your existing) *but they ask way too much*.

You can also buy the xmp compatible stuff that is a max speed of 2933 (as the mobo allows if you have the OC system).

I ended up replacing my ram with 64 gb of the Hyper x fury branded stuff that auto overclocks to the max speed the mobo allows and up to 3600mhz (stuck at 2933 due to Dell limitations).

I actually still have my original 32gb of the 2666 stuff that came with my system. I plan on selling it. So if anyone is interested, let me know.
