Aurora R7, error code 0723, SSD issue?

My son's Aurora R7 won't boot.  He's getting Error Code 0723 at startup and the system won't load Windows. After hitting F12 and doing a diagnostic, he also gets Error Code 0142 & 0151.  Both these errors indicate a hard drive failure.  I'm assuming his SSD drive is fried but I want to be certain before forking out the $$$ for a new one.  A few months back a sudden power outage fried the bios battery so I want to make sure this error is not due to the mother board rather than the drive.  Any help would be appreciated.

For replacement I'm looking at a SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus M.2 NVMe PCI-E 1TB Solid State.  Any thoughts on this would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

Do you have a system with an 16GB or 32GB Optane disk + HDD, or did you have a 256GB+ boot drive?

The 0142 could also be a connection issue.  You could try reseating the OS drive (if Optane, both reinstall the SSD plus unplug and reconnect the cables on the motherboard to the HDD).

If you're still under warranty and the drive failed the self-test, Dell would probably cover it under warranty as a replacement.

I have a 970 Evo 1TB in my R7, no issues.  I also have the pro version in my R7, no issues.  You can have multiple M2 nvme drives if you use an adapter.   I know others have used the Plus version too with no issues in the R7.

Before you get a new ssd try fresh clean install of Windows on the current ssd.  You still see video on monitor suggesting PC posts.  If it has trouble booting into Windows try clean install to prove ssd still works.

It's a 256 boot SSD.  The system also has a 2TB SATA disk which seems to be fine.  It's not under warranty but it's only about 3 years old.  Maybe the power outage did do something to help it fail.  I've since bought a good quality Furman power bar for it in hopes that there won't be any further power issues.  He did try to restore from a factory image so I doubt a fresh install of Windows would work.  I'll buy the Samsung drive and see what happens.  Will post back here with the results.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I agree with the previous post. However both of those errors indicate a drive failure as you are aware. The fact that diagnostics ran properly and detected only drive errors would lead me to believe that the motherboard and other components are fine. The system is only around 2-3 years old and that is rather quick for an SSD to fail, but the power outage that took out the battery may have damaged the drive in the process. The Samsung 970 drive is a very fine drive but there have been a few users that have seen compatibility problems with Dell systems. But that was some time ago and I believe Samsung may have updated their firmware by now. Just make sure that the retailer you choose allows returns for hardware that has compatibility problems.

Thanks for that information, greatly appreciated. There was a time a few years back that some 970s were iffy (compatibility wise) but it looks like those days are behind us. Again thanks for the update!

Bought the new SSD, installed it, used the OS recovery tool to reinstall Windows.  Everything is happy.  Thanks everyone for your help.
