Aurora-R7, installing Ubuntu 18.04

Recently purchased this item Model #AWAUR7-7040SLV-PUS from Costco and I am trying to install Ubuntu with primary use for Machine Learning. Has anyone gone through the installation with this specific machine? I purchased a Dell XPS desktop prior to this and failed in Ubuntu installation. Ended up returning the whole thing back to Costco. I don't want to go through the same cycle again.

Tips for Ubuntu Linux installs (on recent Aurora R5-R7) are here:

Dropping in a spare SATA-based HDD/SSD (as a dedicated Linux drive) is probably the easiest and safest way to test and run it.

Actually Legacy F12 booting from a USB flash Drive with CASPER PERSISTENCE PARTITION is the easiest.

Creating a live Linux USB stick isn't anything new. And, in fact, the ability to have casper persistence with a live CD/USB stick isn't terribly new. What many people might not be aware of, however, is just how easy it is to make a bootable USB stick that you can use like a regular Linux install. Using the easy as 123 installer on any of the Ubuntu derivatives, creating a bootable USB drive with persistence is simple. Aka Casper the Friendly Ghost.

You do realize that we never provided Ubuntu drivers for the Aurora-R7? Only Windows 10. If you cannot find 3rd party Ubuntu Intel chipset Z370 drivers, none of the other devices drivers will install.

Ubuntu 18.04 works perfectly fine on the R7, I was able to install without any modification via live USB.

(previously install m.2 name to hold windows, and am using the original 1TB HDD for ubuntu (freshly wiped))

Make sure you disable secure boot to enable the ppa Nvidia drivers to install correctly.

Anyone know how one could control the case fans within ubuntu?

Desktop is getting might warm running TensorFlow-gpu... :)

No, not really.

The old Alienware machines had discrete (micro-controller based) MIO-Boards. It was my understanding they continued to run their last valid on-board program until Windows was booted (or dual-booted) again.

How did you install Ubuntu on R7? Is this a dual boot? I need some instructions. I am using a bootable usb and created an unallocated disk space using shrink volume in windows. During ubuntu installation I am only able to see nvme partitions under installation type. I cannot locate the space that I created using windows. I don't necessarily need a dual-boot. Even with just ubuntu machine some guidance would be helpful. Thanks

Try Install/ boot from its own SATA drive.
