Congratulations on your work, but I'm pretty sure the only PCI-espress X16 slot on that motherboard is the top one.  You are installed in a PCI-express X8.

It just means you are in a slower PCI lane, so you're not getting the full performance that is possible out of your video card.

I see. Should have looked into it. I do see in nVidia control panel that I am running x8. Is there a significant drop in performance? If so I may need to switch back to x16 and re-think airflow.

You have a top notch video card, I would want to squeeze all the performance out of it that I could.

Try the top slot and see if the performance change is worth it to you.

Best of luck!

Amen forgot to say good job as well. But he could I mean could just leave it in the lower and push it a little harder in MSI and gain is performance back if there is a difference. Am I pushing the OC

Thought both slots ran at 8x? I swear someone told me on here once I could be mistaken though.

"I see both slots on my motherboard at x8 (links to pics below). I am still a bit confused, do any of the slots can actually run at x16?"

No - Only 8 pcie lanes are powered for the top and bottom GPU slots.

Thanks for the update! I see both slots on my motherboard at x8 (links to pics below). I am still a bit confused, do any of the slots can actually run at x16? I left the 3080 on the bottom slot for now. Will run some stress tonight and play COD cold war for a few hours. I play at 4k so it should stress the GPU and CPU enough to get decent results. Let me know if slot 1 is still better.

It's also in the service manual

16=8    No, my mistake, the other 8.

Thanks Dell630i

The top slot is better because it has improved airflow, the bottom slot is too close to the bottom for good thermals, especially if you have a 2.5" SSD down there.

@r72019

He took both bins out, he showed that in the images. Seemed to have enough room under it for air flow. I am real excited to see his thermals.

@iXp0

Can you post a picture with the PSU closed?

See below for pic of the PSU arm closed.

So I did do some thermal testing. This is just preliminary testing and nothing can be conclusive and will require more testing. However things do look promising. I used 3DMark to perform a benchmark and stress test. See below links for screenshot of test results. CPU avg ~50'C and the GPU avg ~70'C. The test pushed the GPU & CPU ~90% load. 3DMark did give me a "Passed" result for stress test. I played COD Cold War for half hour. I am getting around 80-95 FPS with DLSS + Ray Tracing in 4K resolution! Coming from GTX 1080 TI that barely reached 60fps in 4k, I am impressed. One con, loud fan noises now. Before my system was very quiet, and now there is loud fan noises, probably due to this case being made for blower type GPUs. I will run a few matches of Warzone tonight which is pretty demanding game in terms of GPU and CPU.

@iXp0

Not bad at all out of these micro waves. A little tweaking and fan replacements and you can get better temps bud. But to me looking at the images there is plenty of room sitting in the basement. You can try the upper slot but I'm thinking your results will be close to what you have now. NOW in The White Knight I could really push that card to its limit. I really want the EVGA OC version and from your speeds I see I can push that baby a lot farther then I can this 2080Ti.

PS my cards fans run high while gamin to. Its all good I would rather throw the head phones and keep my card running cool..................

Add me Finaltouch68#1150 I play WAR and MW there my fav. All though this 2080Ti is having trouble pushing WAR down the road. I am trying older drivers tonight and see if I get smoother game play. I like things cranked up and looking pretty so I ask a lot of the cards.

"Bear in mind I haven't conducted a test to prove that removing the NVME switches it to x16 "

There is no way to get PCiE 3.0 x16 on the R8.  There are only 8 powered lanes in both GPU slots.

@iXp0

Nice job in fitting the 3080 although I probably wouldn't want to do this as I feel like the FE card looks to squeeze everything in a case that's very compact. Also to answer your questions, motherboards typically have both an x16 and x8 slot (x16 being the top) but it shares the lanes with the NVME slot.

https://graphicscardhub.com/gpu-pcie-running-x8/

If you open up GPU-Z and move the card to the top slot, it'll probably say that it's x16 but only running on x8. Bear in mind I haven't conducted a test to prove that removing the NVME switches it to x16 but that's my theory is that this motherboard shares the PCIE lanes with the NVME. As long as the temps are good, I think perhaps you have a good setup for airflow.
