I am having the same issue since I received mine about 2 weeks ago. Calling dell in the morning. This can not happen when recording audio. We spend this much money on a computer it should not sound this way.

@Steve_Martinez , assuming you’re in the US, your tech support phone call adventure will begin in a few hours. Given that it is Monday, I suggest the following tips that I hope can reduce your frustration. Believe me, feeling frustrated is considered a mild response.

1. Run SupportAssist diagnostics through the website. This will cause the results to be logged on Dell’s side. If not your will spend at least 10 minutes running it while the support person puts you on hold.

2. Very likely he answer you would get is “Sir, your diagnostics shows everything PASSED. Congratulations sir on your purchase of our very state of the art gaming pc. May I interest you in upgrading your xyz to abc for $ special price?’ - note that at this point you are past frustrated.

To counter this, I recommend you record the jet engine sound coming from your system and play it back on the phone. Or you can reason that a performance system needs to be able to handle the heat without undue throttling of the fan. Tell them this is unacceptable and they either have a technician come remedy it or provide some solution.

3. As @Anonymous mentioned, there are many posts both in AW and XPS boards. That’s how we all got to this community in the first place.

4. Above all, if you’re in USA, there is that 30-day return period. You may have to use it as I did mine for an Optiplex AIO but I kept my R8 because I was confident I could fix my jet sounding pc.

When you call to arrange for a return, you might get a counter offer to keep your pc for a token for your suffering. I think ballpark figure is 10%. YMMV.

Good luck!

Hey!! I know it is frustrating it happened the same to me, getting excited home to use your new super expensive computer and boom... the turbine noise comes out of the PC! sooo disappointing... besides that I like the aurora r8 and I think is a very powerful computer for whatever you want... my only problem was the fan noise... I was ab to return it until I figured out how to solve it... I just changed the super-low-quality very cheap fans that come with the computer (top and front are the noisiest ones, CPU has no so much problems) I used the NOCTUA NF-P12 redux fans or also you can use the CORSAIR ML120... any of these models fit perfectly into the top and front fans... so... once you replace them, you'll fall in love with your computer again!

I'm only another customer who passed for the same situation, just sharing, hope it can help you!!!!

Just pointing out that some people on here who just purchased a brand new 9900K [or other intel CPU], might not want to underclock their system by reducing their CPU's maximum boost speed from 5.0 GHz, down to a base frequency of 3.6 GHz (or the equivalent reductions for the other 8th/9th gen CPUs).  I mean, if you really wanted, you can set the base frequency even lower, say 1.5 Ghz, and maybe you won't even need the fans.

To fix just go into bios and turn off the turbo boost.

Mu R8 just showed up without watercooling!!! Very upset.

They out the smallest junkiest air coolers ive ever seen. Like the stuff looks straight out of the 90s.

Anyways fixing the blasting fans is easy. Command center has no control over the fans its a lie.

To fix just go into bios and turn off the turbo boost.

When its boosts the cpu temp spikes and the fan freaks out. Running your cou clock lower sctually makes the pc faster because it what be thermal clocking and spazzing the fan out. I am clock 1.5ghz lower and no as advertised, whisper quite operation. Getting my own ssd since i knew theyd give junky seagate parts in their products. So right now the only annoying sound is the clicking of the maxed out HDD all the time

Agreed.

P=CV^2fAF

P - Power

C - Capacitance

V - Voltage

f - frequency

AF - Activity Factor

Turning off Turbo dials down both V and f which cuts down A LOT of power usage by the CPU especially with voltage being a square factor. Moreover, we are talking about Intel's 14+++(ad infinitum +) process here that has tremendous amount of VDD headroom for turbo due to years of optimization.

When you look at the $$ you pay for your CPU, most often the premium goes to this turbo headroom. Dialing it down just because you don't want to deal with the air cooler or low quality fan is like buying a powerful car and driving it all day long with that Econ button turned on. To each their own, but hey, just saying...

Hello thread,

I have an r8 which is way too loud. I have called Alienware Support about this problem twice now, and both times asked to perform a litany of tests to find that the fans were indeed in working order. The system is, by design, powerful but LOUD.

It is air-cooled as of now. I tried replacing TOP and FRONT fans with ML120s and got the TOP fan BIOS error message on startup. When I logged onto Windows, the TOP fan would not blow (stuck at 0 RPM) causing the CPU/GPU to idle 5C greater than with the default fan installed. Attempting to set a fixed speed for the TOP fan through AWCC did not work, and it would only start blowing when the GPU/CPU got hot (high 60s-70s C). By that point, it blew hard and LOUD.

To avoid the BIOS error, I am thinking of returning the ML120s and installing an ML120 Pro into the TOP fan slot, but after some research, it seems the ML120 Pro is pretty noisy at high RPM; thus, I may run into the same problem I have now. However, from @Ivan91's experience, it seems that with both a Corsair H60 and an ML120 Pro installed, the system stays cool enough for the ML120 Pro to work at relatively low RPM, so the noise level is bearable.

My questions are as follows:

1) Does anyone know of any fans (other than the ML120 Pro) which are compatible with Alienware BIOS on startup? This way I can look for something more quiet. Sites like BeQuiet and QuietPC offer a great selection of fans, but I don't know how to check if they're compatible with Alienware BIOS, and would prefer not to buy and return multiple products until I find one which spins at startup.

2) How do I install a liquid cooling unit? I would be willing to buy the H60 as long as it reduced my noise by keeping the system cool, but I am new to PC building and wouldn't be comfortable dismantling the existing CPU air-cooler without an in-depth explanation on how to securely install the H60. If there are compatible CPU air-coolers out there which people have liked, I am open to those too.

Thanks in advance to anyone with answers.

Not that I know of. Noctua NF A12x25 used to work for @Porkchopolous until a BIOS update disabled that. One day I'm gonna build that 555 circuit to spoof the stock fan's tach signal but that will probably when even the ML120 Pro gets disabled.

@Anonymous

There is some good information in this thread Experience of Buying an Aurora R8

I would like to mention that I did not start from zero in PC building but have been away from it for ~20 years. The last time I did that, I cracked a 440BX motherboard that led to an RMA. And before that, a PC that had to be shipped to another country for a sound card to be recognized by Win95.

But still I decided I had to do what I had to do in that post I made about my R8 experience. I understand that putting my untrained fingers into what is possibly the most expensive rig I've bought has a significant amount of risk. However, times have changed and there's videos and forums like this to answer questions.

If you ask me specifically what's important when it comes to installing that H60? Read the manual, make sure all screws go back where they are, alcohol wipes, nothing should require excessive force (that includes turning the screwdriver). Oh, there could be that mounting plate that requires you to go to the back-side of your motherboard so that could be a pain but many have done it or found that there's already a plate installed. And yes, please invest in some anti-static gear.

The copper Cryorig C7 **bleep** will fit and is rated for TDP of 115W, better than the stock cooler's 65W TDP rating.  MSRP is $60, but due to a supply shortage in combination with the high demand for this item, there's a lot of price gouging.

I went through this very same exercise some time ago. I've tried many different fans including the Corsair ML120, ML120 Pro, Noctua AF-12, and Noctua NF-F12. The only fan that will not trigger a boot level diagnostic is the ML120 Pro. All others will refuse to spin on system start until Windows loads. The ML120 Pro however will start spinning immediately on power on which is why the diagnostic doesn't get triggered.

Any of the other fans mentioned though will work as front case fans just fine with no errors triggered either.

Save yourself the headache and wasted money and use my experience to your benefit. Go with the ML120 Pro for your CPU's radiator fan if you want something that just works.

BTW, I'm now on BIOS version 1.0.19 and still no problems.

This is the reply I was hoping from you.

I started with zero experience back in December 2018 when I bought my XPS 8930 with some super awesome components, and then experienced the "CRAZY FAN NOISE". That brought me to this Community, where I essentially learned everything I know about computer modification. Some additional information was obtained from Youtube videos and absorbing info from vendors.

It takes a lot to do what you have done.

Update: I purchased the NOCTUA NF-A12x24 for the Top Fan and it gave me the error as someone predicted. I might move it to the Front Fan spot and just get the ML120 Pros for the Top. I also replaced the stock CPU fan with a NOCTUA NF-A8 for the CPU Fan.

The rig is now noticeably quieter but the Stock Front Fan still revs up seriously when under load. Will need to replace that as mentioned above.

I looked into liquid cooling and decided I didn't want to take the risks and invest myself in the maintenance of an AIO. I guess I'm just sticking with air cooling, time will tell if I decide to upgrade the CPU heat sink.

What concerns me the most now is that the NOCTUA NF-A8, my chosen CPU fan replacement, brings up a BIOS error at startup. I don't think anyone else on this discussion has experienced BIOS errors with the CPU fan. At Idle, my CPU is in the high 40s C. Both TOP and CPU fan are running pretty slow according to AWCC. Additionally, when I try to rev up those fans by creating a custom profile in AWCC (by setting fan speed to fixed at 100%), the fans will speed up but only up to ~50% of max RPM according to AWCC.

Following the AWCC debacle and from my memory of others complaining of AWCC's ruination of fan speed, I uninstalled AWCC and downloaded SpeedFan. Unfortunately, SpeedFan isn't recognizing any of my fans (none show up in the configuration menu), so likely Aurora BIOS is preventing proper recognition or control of the fans through SpeedFan.

Does anyone know any other fan speed control software? I think I can make this setup work, but my one concern right now is the temperatures. If I have more control over the fan, e.g. by establishing a curve, I think I can mitigate temperature rises while keeping the PC quiet. I am hesitant to entrust this task to AWCC, but if another software is capable, I won't mind keeping this setup if the only setback is a BIOS error on startup.

I'm honestly afraid to game at all on the PC right now. I started up Rainbow Six Siege for 3 minutes, shut it down after hearing the Front Fan roar at me, then furrowed my brow at the screen while I heard the Front Fan slowly die down, only for a final shriek to be emitted from it as I opened Chrome.

Oh Dell, you're an **bleep**.

Correction: Top Fan at this point doesn't spin AT ALL. Hopefully will work with ML120 Pro, coming on 08/28.
