Aurora R9, promotes easy upgrades (memory compatibility issues)
So I ordered and Alienware Aurora R9 Computer which I'm still waiting for by the way. And was Doing some research on the system and was wondering about upgrading the Aurora R9 in the Future, like Alienware is advertising that it is one of the most easiest upgradable systems. Found some complaints from people saying the same hyperx fury ram that comes with the new alienware aurora does not work with the normal retail version of the hyperx fury ram. So emailed dell tech people on here and was told that the hyperx fury ram is the same as retail just have to make sure i get the exact ram, I know the exact ram doesn't work from others people having this issue. So i emailed Kingtson the manufacture of the hyperx ram for Dell and this is what i was told quote: " the Aurora uses customized variants of the FURY modules that do not work with the commercial variants. You will either need to get an upgrade through Dell, or replace the existing kit with an entirely new kit of memory. " Checked through dell and i cannot purchase the same hyperx fury ram through dell, So how is this suppose to be a easy fully upgradable system if i cant even add the simplest of things like more ram to my existing ram that i cant use the same retail ram and can't even get a ram upgrade through dell. if i knew this at the beginning i would have either ordered more ram at the time and bumped it upt to 32gb (if i was informed of this from dell that does not publish this anywhere and there own workers don't even know) or most likely would not have even ordered the alienware aurora R9. Just giving me more reason to send it back if it ever shows up.Just mad that now in the future if i keep the computer and decide to upgrade the memory, instead of just adding to the memory i have to replace it all. so again false advertising on there end with the specially made memory just for dell

So the voltage that the dell hyperx ram uses runs at higher voltage then the same retail hyperx ram, so thats why its not compatible with retail ram cause of the voltage ?

Kingston HyperX fury 2666 and 2933 SPD profiles are at 1.20v. https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX429C17FB2K2_16.pdf
If you mixed them, you'd have mismatched RAM. It may black screen on startup, may run poorly, or timings and speed may get negatively impacted. Hard to say, that's why it's recommended not to mix RAM, and instead only used matched sets. You could buy an entirely new matched set of Kingston RAM, remove the Dell RAM, and you should be fine. I have 16GB x 4 of the Kingston HyperX fury 2933, no issues.

This isn't entirely accurate.....
I have the same machine as you @fubar82 Looking at the RAM specs through CPU-Z and Alienware OC it shows 2666hz with the following timings and voltages: 18-18-18-43 Volt 1.2
I think like everyone else is saying.. in order to upgrade to 32 or more.. we're going to have to pull all the RAM out and start over.

ya i know all that i just wanted to know what the differences between the dell fury ram and the retail fury ram and why they they don't work together cause they should at least work together if there the same spec. I was told by kingston the ram is made for dell specs, so it looks likes the difference is the voltage that the retail and dell versions run at. dell is 1.25v-1.35 and retail is 1.20v.

The voltage difference is probably one parameter that is apparent to customers like us. Despite not being top rung electronics component like a CPU or GPU, a DRAM itself is pretty complex. Without having data sheets next to each other and doing a line by line comparison, some next order differences would be unknown.

ya was figuring i would have to do that. just would have been nice if it was compatible to save a little money in the future. But ya know its cheaper to get a good 32gb of 3200mhz ram for cheaper then it is to go with 16gb of ram from dell at slower speed. I'm sure the 16gb that I'm getting with my new Computer will be good enough anyways for awhile. Hopefully Monday I get it, i ordered it 20 days ago now. Bought the Dell S2716DG monitor on boxing day to go with it. its 1440p 144hz g-sync monitor regular price @best buy was $850 on for $450. Also bought all new accessories. Corsair k68 rgb keyboard, Corsair Harpoon wireless mouse, Corsair st100 rgb headset stand and to top it off a new corsair oversized mouse pad lol. Also bought a new white desk with glass top and new set of the Logitech z313 2.1 speakers (for now). Last thing I'm looking at is getting the new Alienware AW510H 7.1 surround head set and gotta have a gaming chair too...eventually lol. Now Just need the Computer, and i think by having everything all set up and ready to go has had made me more impatient with waiting on the computer to show up and hoping its a powerhouse lol.

You can change the timings by selecting a different SDP profile though BIOs or the OC tab. You can choose between OC level 1, OC Level 2, and XMP disabled, and compare to what the same SPD profiles would be in the link I posted for the retail 2933 RAM:
JEDEC/PnP: DDR4-2933 CL17-19-19 @1.2V
•XMP Profile #1: DDR4-2933 CL17-19-19 @1.2V
•XMP Profile #2: DDR4-2666 CL16-18-18 @1.2V
https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX429C17FB2K2_16.pdf
And/or lookup the 2666 specs on kingston.com. The bigger difference is the 1.35V 2933 Dell Ram mentioned in the mod post, as compared to the above for the 2933 1.20V retail ram. The 1.25V (or 1.20V rounded?) 2666 Dell RAM that the mod referenced may have been rounded down by CPUz, who knows..

@r72019
Yeah. This is the RAM I'm going to purchase for 32 gigs. I've been looking around and because of the inability to mess with BIOS OC/RAM on a non-K (unlocked processor) I think it's the best option, as I don't think the other high mhz will run at their speed.

@fubar82 @r72019
But wait... The Aurora R9 that Fubar and I are referring to has an I7-9700. This is the non-unlocked version of the processor, therefore, I'm pretty certain the XMP and OC options in BIOS are greyed out and not available for BIOS RAM tweaking or XMP modifications. (I could be wrong though)...
If I am.. someone please enlightened me and educate me.

@Darqology :
My R8 shipped with i5-9400 and I had the worry that I won’t be able to access XMP profile with the RAM. I bought retail Crucial Ballistix 3200MHz and was able to hit that frequency through XMP profile in BIOS.

Hey ya sorry i have the i7 9700k coming so its OC ready. Ya 32gb of 3200mhz ram would be a better upgrade and cheaper option to go anways

Yea, me to. Mine shipped with a locked CPU and I was able to engage XMP1 and XMP2 via BIOS, and run it at 2933. After adding a k class CPU i was able to install AWCC OC controls and adjust settings (somewhat) via AWCC. But its just XMP1 and XMP2, F2 on startup to access BIOS.
