[Solved] Aurora R8, 4 games crash, different reasons, cause?
Hello Fellow Alienware Community!
Thank you for stopping by, I really appreciated if you could share some advise on what to do with my pc
I purchased my Aurora R8 (RTX 2080, 32GB RAM, i7-9700K) earlier this year, received around January.
Since then I have had 4 games, all of them crashes for different reasons constantly.
- Shadow of Tomb Raider, this game crashes around 20-30 minutes game play, I forgot the name of the issue but it was GPU related. I had that issue for two days straight, I thought it is game only issue, contacted Steam and got refund for the game, so I thought it would be over.
- Nier:Automata, this game was also purchased on Steam. Game would usually crash right around 30 minutes of playing, no error code or anything, but when I check the reliability report, it was LiveKernelEvent code 141. Searched around, seems like GPU related crash, can't really find any viable fix to it. So this game is still unplayable to date.
- Destiny 2 on Steam. Once Destiny 2 moved to Steam, I downloaded it and give it a try. Then the game crashes around 30 minutes of game play, error code Broccoli. Bungie's suggestion was to update windows as well as graphics card, which I check constantly and tried all the latest update. Also tried all the fixes on youtube and different websites, still have the same issue. Still unplayable to date.
Then I start thinking maybe there are something wrong with my system? Not sure either software or Hardware.
I contacted Dell Support via the support assist 3 times.
- Checked epsa test, all hardware seems find from that report.
- reinstalled Windows 10, clean installed all GPU drives and Nvidia experience
Still have the same issue.
- Purchased COD MW last weekend, start having Dev Error 6068 & 5763 since the first day, well these are known issues so I don't know if I should blame Alienware or Activation.
As a matter of fact I just called another Support agent from Dell, did some remote session with me. Move the game from SSD to the HDD that came with the PC, still having issue with Destiny 2 as an example.
At this point I don't know what else can be done. Apparently all Dell Agents are telling me these are known issue, so it is not the Alienware but the game's issue.
Any advise?
Much appreciated!

Update
After days of struggling... I finally reset up the PC, put it on top of the desk just for better air flow.
Downloaded the after burn and have the curve fan set up.... other than that fan noise is killing me, the GPU is now properly cooled I guess... was able to complete the stress test with 79°C logged and it didn't crash COD MW anymore...
Thank you so much for everyone's input!
And I am pretty sure I won't be buying anymore pre-build from now on..... after the warranty expires I would like to try to water cool this guy and see how it goes

@GTS81 I was wondering if this would work?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HHMJIIO/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=optim0f-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B007YLUCKQ&linkId=299536ca20eb1ea219f1bfeae8406677&th=1
Not sure if it is too big for R8 chassis?

Probably too big. The backplate would prevent the swing-arm from closing.
Plus this just converts your blower style card into an open fan style and you end up recirculating heat in the chassis anyways. Also, you void any warranty left for the card once you attempt any mod like this. I'd recommend getting a card replacement while you're still within the warranty period.
I know, it is painful waiting on the phone and then getting the rep to agree to send a technician over with a replacement. So here are some tips on expediting the process:
1. Run your Supportassist diagnostics now. Not the basic one but the comprehensive diagnostics. Dell's server will record all the results.
2. The first thing the rep would tell you to do is to run Supportassist. You will then very confidently tell him/ her you have done so, and please check the server.
3. Rep will confirm there was indeed there was a log and results of your run. "All tests came back fine sir. You don't have to worry. Is there anything else I can help you with."
4. At this point, you'll need to combine some Jedi mind-trickery and technical onslaught. Something like this: "Although the GPU test passed on the diagnostics, I was hitting 85C on the GPU. This is causing me to unable to use the R8 as advertised to me during my time of purchase. For example, Dell's website shows XYZ configuration is able to run CSGO at 120FPS and Tomb Raider at 90 FPS. When my system, exactly configured to the same spec ran Tomb Raider, I hit 90 FPS but with GPU at 85C. Nonetheless, the game crashed after 30 minutes. If I lowered the FPS to 70, or lowered the resultion, then with lower GPU temp, game runs for 2-3 hours, no crashing. I did not get the product I paid for, hence I request an onsite technician for a replacement of a faulty part."
That's why I bought the cheapest possible R8. I didn't want to deal with Dell on my GPU and CPU issues. Rather just buy 3rd party replacement myself from the get-go. In fact, the 560X shipped with my system only saw 1 boot before being replaced by the MSI RX580 8GB Armor OC.

@GTS81 Guess my GPU wasn't defective after all....
This morning I re-set the whole PC, now put the tower on top of my desk hoping it will get better air flow.
Downloaded the after burn from MSI, set up the curve fan, and you know what.... the PC is now under 80°C, just that fan noise is annoying...
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I am not going to buy any pre-build any more.... GPU better to be water cooled after all...

Great to hear that it wasn't a faulty part and all it takes is some crazy fan noise to resolve the games crashing problem.

Is there a large metal back-plate on the back of your OEM RTX-2080 ? Those really help dissipate the heat.
So these new cards go red-line unstable ... instead of just throttling-back ? That doesn’t sound right.

@Tesla1856 I don’t remember seeing the metal back plate. I will open it today and take some photos. Also found out that crazy noise is from the GPU fan, unfortunately changing the front fan doesn’t do much and the GPU still get to 80°C quite easily if I play COD MW or Shadow of Tomb Raider.... guess will have to re-paste it and see if there is any improvement

So I saw this design on reddit, this might fix my GPU fan working too hard?
anyways was wondering if you guys know what parts are needed for this:

That would make opening up the case interesting, since the fan is mounted on the swinging PSU arm. The reddit guy had open air style GPUs that were recirculating hot air in the case, so this would have made a bigger difference for him (I'll refrain from commenting on his running a 1070 with a 1080ti). The OEM Dell GPU is blower style so it pushes the air out the back of the case.

I suppose if the fan cable is long enough, it will just follow the swing-arm + additional bracket along a sweeping arc, no? Note that there's almost no wiggle space w.r.t. swing-arm movement. I still occasionally unseat by GPU when the power cable isn't parked correctly in the PSU chamber and snags the card as the arm is moved.
@r72019 correctly pointed out that this solution only helps (a little) with open fan cards. Blower style cards that are shipped with Auroras do not benefit from this. I said it's of little help because I did a similar config before my AIO liquid cooling mod and with the fan in this config, it only cools down my open fan RX580 card by 2C.

Thank you so much for all your replies!
Browsing around the community I found myself if not along, which I am glad and also mad....
Guess R8 is really bad chassis to begin with also that blower fan lol
So I am considering two mods now:
- Go with Mopheus II with two 15mm thick fans? Think this is about right size to fit in. Questions is not sure how effective this is since there is not dedicated exhaust fan
- Get the AIO kit for GPU and install in the front? don't want to do the external radiator yet...
