X51 R1, graphics card upgrade?

Hi @YabloB,

It sounds like you know your stuff with the X51. I believe mine is an R1 variant as it has an i7-3770 with 16GB of RAM. Additionally, I have the big 330 Watt power brick. Currently it has a 1GB GTX 555 in it and I wanted to step it up hopefully to a 6GB card. However, I am unsure if the GTX 1060 or GTX 1660 is a better route or if one isn't even compatible. Would you be able to offer any advice? Thank you in advance!

R1 power board VFHMM must be replaced with R2 D85RT and 330W power brick used.

Hi,

Unfortunately, you may be unable to stably run a GTX 1660 within the R1. The GTX 1660 power drawl is near 150 W and the GTX 1060 is near 120 W. The GTX 1060 will certainly operate stable in the R1 model, assuming the graphics card is not being overclocked via a voltage multiplier.

That said... There may be modifications you can make to use a GTX 1660 within the x51 R1. e.g. removing the blu-ray drive, replacing the ATA hard drive with an SSD (if not done already) and finally, under clocking ("undervolting") the GTX 1660 until it runs stable during load (games). Doing so, however, may only yield slight gains over the GTX 1060 in performance. If you already have the GTX 1060, I'd suggest to stick with it.

regards,

YabloB

Hi @YabloB  ,

Thank you for the reply. The machine was running the stock GTX 555. I did decide to drop from the 1660 and went with the EVGA 1650 Super instead as I found the power draw was lower than the 1660.

Currently, the card seems to be performing well. I’m a little unsure how to check stability. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I do have an SSD planned for the next upgrade.

Thank you again for your advice and help!

*Note: For any other X51 owners who want to perform this upgrade. In my case, the A03 bios did not support the 16 series Nvidia cards. I resolved this by going to Dells bios support page and downloading the A06, A07, and A14 bios. You will needed to step from one bios to the next as you cannot go straight from A03 to A14. You will first run the A06, then the A07, and finally the A14. Hope this helps.

Hey, So are you sure you are on R1 going to GTX 1650S with no issues?

Im currently on R1 with A14 Bios, GTX 960 , 330 W , and was planning on upgrading to GTX 1060. But youre the first one I see with successful upgrade to 1650S, and I would prefer that instead, as it is about 4% better in performance overall and its cheaper.

Just want to add that I am on a 1650 Super as well. Recently upgraded from GTX 660 with no issues (no modifications necessary; just make sure you're on last bios A14)

X51 R1 i7-3770, 330 W

There's a few posts out there saying "16x/Turing series Nvidia cards won't work, 1060 is the highest you can go" (even though I've seen a few mentions of people running 1070), so hopefully this topic helps folks in a similar situation.

I'm _pretty sure_ the 1660 would work because the TDP of a 1660 is rated at 120W while the GTX 660 is rated at 140W. I bought one to try; unfortunately, it requires an 8 pin connector. In my case, I had two 6 pin connectors. I bought a Dual 6-pin female to 8-pin male adapter, but it's wasn't low profile enough: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FNBFFXT. I'm not sure I would get this to ever fit in the case with any card without modifications (the card is flipped upside down when put into the case; the clearance from the top of the card where the power is and the bottom of the case is very minimal). I read that you can sometimes use a 6 pin connector with a 8 pin connector. I tried this; windows recognized the card (with drivers installed), however, the card was "reporting issues" in Device Manager. I read somewhere that cards will sometimes only work if all 8 pins are connected (kinda like a safety measure), so I figured this was this issue.

I thought about trying something like this: https://www.moddiy.com/products/PCIE-90-Degree-Angle-L-Shape-Low-Profile-Connector-Extension-Cable.html, but ultimately I settled on the 1650 Super since it only requires a 6 pin. I kinda wish I could get the 1660 to fit ...

P.S. This is the card I ended up buying & am currently using: https://www.newegg.com/evga-geforce-gtx-1650-super-04g-p4-1357-kr/p/N82E16814487482

This is the 1660 I unsuccessfully tried fit in the case with the power cable adapter: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/pny-xlr8-gaming-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1660-overclocked-edition-6gb-gddr5-pci-express-3-0-graphics-card-black/6383715.p?skuId=6383715

Just got the 1650 you bought, and I keep getting black screen and mouse cursor before the login screen.  Did you happen to encounter that.  I did a SSD upgrade at the same time, which was probably a mistake, but was in a rush.

Thanks!

R1 has more than 1 issue.

Power brick must be upgraded to 330W

Power board  R1 needs to be the R2 version.

X51 R1 Power Board Replacement - R1 (VFHMM) with R2 (D85RT)

Its also not clear to me that any newer uefi cards work.

GT1030 and GTX 1050TI an GTX 1060 work.

You have 330W power supply and latest A14 bios installed? Are you on Windows 10 with latest drivers (or, maybe you were not able to get this far)?

What I did when I installed new card: I uninstalled all existing drivers for my previous GPU (GTX 660) and I switched to integrated Intel graphics; shutdown & replace card; reboot (monitor connected to integrated graphics) & install latest drivers; new card appeared in device manager, switched monitor over to GPU

I just successfully upgraded my X51 R1 | 330W PSU | A014 BIOS with a used Dell CD6TT NVIDIA GeForce 1060 3GB. It fit perfectly without any modifications, replacing my failing GTX 555.

Hi.. I have a X51 R1 with the 240 watt power block. I am looking to buy a 330 watt power block and a video card.. I have been looking at the EVGA 1650 Super and the Nvidia GTX 1060 Founders Edition. I am hoping for a problem free installation. Any one want to confirm that I don't need to worry about my power board, etc?

R1 power board needs update to the R2 version.

VFHMM needs to be replaced with
ANDROMEDA X51 R2 POWER BOARD D85RT

Then the 330W unit works with a 1060

Or you can remove your motherboard and put it into a new case with PCI-E verticle riser and use regular power supply.

So would the 1650 Super require the same? How hard is the power board to get to and switch out? Or since I have the i3 processor should I just do a 1050 ti?

Did you have to upgrade the powerboard for the upgrade to the GTX 1650 Super?

I am on R1 330w PSU with the GTX 555 right now and I want to upgrade the GPU as high as possible without any other modifications to the system hopefully...

Hiya akruk98,

why not go for a RTX ? or a AMD, your system is worth it ^^
