You should review the online Alienware X51 R2 Specifications PDF.

I believe the maximum memory will be 2 x 8gb (16gb total)

Technically 1600Mhz is the maximum supported speed. You could try 1866 or 2133Mhz but there's no guarantee that these will work. Those speeds do work on the mobile 4th gen processors though.

No problem, thanks, I think 16GB should be ample. I've just finally got round to doing the upgrade from Windows 8 to 10, it has 8GB at the moment and even on a fresh install it's not running so great.

HD wise, It already has had an SSD popped in there for its main drive. Is there any easy way for me to do away with that SSD and replace with an NVME without changing many other components etc?

@speedstep Hello from your post I see that you say "DDR3 1600 MHZ PC3 12800 1.35v / 1.5v  9-9-9-24" So I could buy the Low Voltage versions of 8GB DDR3 Ram and it would work on my X51 R2 right?

edit: I was looking at this one: V7128008GBD-LV V7 8GB DDR3 PC3L_12800 _ 1600MHZ DIMM
