10 Hour battery life? Alienware 17 R3 4k 980M 950 Pro

10 Hour battery life? Alienware 17 R3 4k 980M 950 Pro

So.. I disconnected the power adapter cable because the blue light is always so bright by my face when I sleep with it every night.  I usually research and learn something before I sleep and let a video run.

It doesn't go hibernate if I don't press the button so it was on.

I had 50% brightness and I think 60% battery life left.  I opened the lid and it said 8+ hours remaining on battery.  I have a ton of website videos up that are not playing but they take up 8% at idle constant.  I saw was surfing facebook and recommenting.  I checked another vid for information then I think it went down to 53%.  I checked battery and it said 5+ hours remaining.

With websurfing alone on balanced mode and no other websites up and 50% brightness or less you can get 10 hours battery life?

I think the whole ultrabook thing is for stupid people who think they have better computing because it's smaller so they get more battery.  The i7-6500u specs are basically i7-6700HQ with 2 less cores.  If you take 2 less cores away from the 6700HQ it would basically have the same TDP.  Weird thing is the i7-6500U cost more.  Running at 1 core with Windows 10 Pro with the latest updates it's like running a i7-6500U with one core.  I mean, the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility says low TDP usage and it running chrome on Intel 530 Pro instead of nvidia means nvidia is probalby 100% parked and not being used due to intelligent idle processing from the new OS, drivers, and mobile architecture.

The only down side to having this than an equivalently priced ultrabook is less ram, not as much SSD space, no touch capability, size.

The upsides of having this than an equivalently priced ultrabook is the screen is better, it's more desktop oriented productivity performance, desktop oriented gaming performance.

Basically, anything else but battery life so if anyone says these eat more at same processing 1:1 demand that is highly noticeable they are wrong and if they try to rationalize saying it's the ultrabook equipment they are uninformed/misinformed.

Also they don't have a gaming grade network chipset and audiophile grade audio chipset.

If I got an identically configured Alienware 17 R3 4k but with 970m instead of 980m I would have saved nearly $600.

My findings were done on a 980m so if you were to compare the 970m vs ultrabook then getting an ultrabook instead would be 100% retarded.  If you want to do more with the Alienware you can.  If you want to do more with the Surface and don't draw much of anything but are a latest and greatest mobile fanboy then have fun w/ slower performance under power throttling all the time to do what this does at 1/4 performance.

I am very impressed with 17 R3 battery as well. I get about 8 to 9 hours on my system running on battery.

This is my system:

Alienware 17 R3 (GTX 980M)

i7-6820HK

4k panel

GTX 980M with 4GB GDDR5

16GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2133MHz

256GB PCIe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)

500GB Samsung Evo 850 SSD.

What I do daily is uploading all of my videos into youtube (private). All of my videos are uploaded from the 1tb mechanical drive. I set laptop to POWER SAVER in power plan.

I unplug at 12am, go to bed. wake up at around 8:30  and there would be 10% left.

I test Ripbot264 and it would rain the battery in less than 2 hours (100% cpu usuage).

yeah under heavy gaming.. it's like 2 hours but while waiting for food at a restaurant while online gaming it's no problem

I was watching videos of people trying to keep their surface 4 pro from throttling while playing minecraft lol

i am not sure what today trend with making laptops smaller, and more expensive. I mean I love my 17 R3, it's 10 lb. So what? once it's on the table top. Who cares. And I can change the LED color & my roccat kone xtd to match. How cool is that.

Some people buy the surface book to game. dual core i7 and gtx 940m...$2700. People are so ill-informed.

I know, even laying on my lap I feel it's more locked down than having a light laptop that could easily fall over.

If people use the touch and pen ability a lot then it definitely out weighs.  It's also easier on the mind for others maybe as they can get around quicker when on the go.  I don't mind staring at the cursor with high cursor gains but sensitivity on lowest possible.

I like the ability to do powerful task at will.  I just don't like the limited mentality of not being able to play 3D games or intensive task.  I have an android cellphone for that.

Maybe if you are in a car and use the tablet for setting up quick settings but.. that's not really normal use.

The problem is when many people don't even know this exist.  I walk around Best Buy and other stores to see what is available.  A lot of the stuff are complete junk yet people buy.  It's the only ones available obviously.  The surface pro 4 is $1.6k but people think it's that for Microsoft or an iPad pro and nothing else.

There's a lot of gaming laptops out there like Razer but they use 4th gen Intel and it cost $2k.  Anyone who doesn't have a computer consultant friend like us won't know and will be stuck with inferior options.

When I got the laptop I wanted just 4k.  I was thinking the 970m cannot play games in 4k anywhere near playable.  I was wrong.  I went 980m and can play games easier but it's not 100% perfect.

I know pascal is coming out but everyday of potential learning would be lost until then.  It's an investment.

Without the internet, I think computers would be at 10% potential.  I have absolutely no idea what to do when I lose internet connection.

From what I've seen with computing, I see with cars, nutrition, physiology, muscular health, mental health, and many other things.  In the beginning my focus was to get my Packard Bell to go fast but I had no idea so I started making stuff up like disassembling my sega and figuring out how to connect it.  Reasons come first, answers come second.

A lot of people never had the immense the desire I had to learn thing.  I like to boil down everything and find the absolute meaning.  I found for me it goes truth > justice > love.  People who seek love first would end up making lies supecede truth then justice is wrong and eventually it leads to eternal ***.  Look up NDE *** (near death experience) videos on youtube.  The afterlife is real.
