AlienWare X51 R2 USB 3.0 ports
So I am having real flakiness with the USB 3.0 ports on the back of my Alienware x51. For example, a USB 3.0 mike plugged into the front ports works fine. Plug it into the back and the drivers fail and the sound is horrible. Getting similair problems with anything else plugged into the ports, game controllers, etc. The USB 2.0 ports work fine. Any ideas?
I have the latest A10 firmware listed for the machine.
Dell update says the machine is up to date.
Essentially that means two ports for audio work and unfortunately, that's not enough.

Make sure the BIOS is up to date here and also reinstall this 3.0 USB driver.
Let me know!

You seem to be using the Intel series 8 Extensible Host Controller with the C220 chipset:
Attempted to install the latest Intel drivers from here:
Same result, the installer claims that the hardware does not meet the minimum requirements, although apparently the drivers got in here in the first place.

Note from random troubleshooters in the various forums on workarounds:
Important Notice: As of Windows 8.1, we don’t recommend replacing the in-box Windows USB 3.0 stack with the Intel Windows 7 stack, as described in this post. This post is being kept for historical background, but we recommend working with your computer manufacturer and/or Microsoft on any remaining issues with the built-in Windows 8.1 USB 3.0 stack.

Firmware up-to-date at A10, no joy.
Drivers will not install, see following:

I would try ...
- Uninstall any related and non-working Driver Suites from Programs & Features and reboot.
- Delete and/or uninstall any non-working or error-ed devices from Device Manager. Reboot the computer and let them Plug-and-Play.
- If still in error or not working, try manually updating drivers from online (Windows Update).
There is also a setting at Control Panel / System / Advanced / Hardware / Device Install Settings that should probably be set to Yes (Recommended).

Is anything in Device Manager in-error or uncategorized?
Set Device Manager to View by Connection. Open section that contains the USB Controllers (maybe even one of the non-working hubs all the way) . Upload a ScreenShot.

Attempts to uninstall the extensible host controller driver brings the machine to a grinding halt, to the point where only a hard power disconnect will get the machine back in working order. I have two working USB 3.0 ports in front that do work, so I'm loathe to mess with it too much. If those stop working I'm completely dead in the water. Really, I haven't seen a machine stop that hard in ages, even depressing the power button constantly for a hard reboot stops working.
Maybe this hint from an Intel guy will shed some light, it was in reference to something on the forums they are calling the "Intel/Microsoft USB 3.0 driver spat." This is in reference to an Asus machine, but with the exact same chipset.

Right now, no. If you plug one of the USB devices into the back, however, that's when things begin to get wonky. For example, the ProCast is a two port digital to analog mixer with a built-in microphone and headphone jack that can act as a mixer. Plug it in the front, everything is fine, plug it in the back and things go very strange. It identifies it as USB Microphone Generic and USB Headphones and the driver goes into error, just before the entire operating system starts to descend in instability. Here's how it looks right now:
Once the driver fails, very bad things start to happen. Again, I haven't seen things go that bad with one of my Windows systems since Win95.

2. Did the back USB ports ever work properly?
