Alienware 14-R1, Ram slot not detected
Hi,
I am reaching out to you because I have an alienware 14 with windows 7 ultimate. I bought this pc with 16GB 3 years ago and everything was fine. But since 2 months I realized that I only have 8gb of ram now. I tried both of stick separatly and they both work fine.

Read through the Service Manual for disassembly instructions. The F2 bios will show the amount of ram installed in each memory slot. So test each ram stick in each slot and check the bios.
#1 8GB in #1 slot, power on, F2, check the amount, power off
#1 8GB in #2 slot, power on, F2, check the amount, power off
#2 8GB in #1 slot, power on, F2, check the amount, power off
#2 8GB in #2 slot, power on, F2, check the amount, power off
If each memory stick works in both slots and shows in the Bios, then you have an operating system issue, not a hardware fault.

Hi,
thank you for your answer. I did what you suggested and my sticks are both fine and work separatly in each slot. So as you suggest it's an operating system issue, so what should I do ?

Think back to two months ago, what Windows updates did you install? Or what other software changes did you make? Did you install a newer Bios or any other system drivers? Have you considered rolling back the operating system to before the two month period?

Hi,
I ony installed the recommanded upadtes for windows or the most important ones as they call it. I've never updated my bios and don't recall installing any system drivers. The problem is that i dont have a precise date where I lost my ram because I never checked for it. I just randomly discoeverd it trought control pannel then I checked in the bios which confirmed it.

Not sure what the culprit might be. The fact that the bios shows the memory sticks correctly in each slot means that the hardware is OK. You might want to post the issue on the OS board to get other users thoughts. Be sure to mention that the bios shows the correct amount.

I think we miss understood each other. The bios says memory slot 0 not detected. What I said was that when I try the stick separatly they are fine in any slot but only by themself. Sorry if I didnt express myself correctly.
