Alienware 14 keyboard issue

So I just bought this Alienware laptop 3 days ago. I love it, but my keyboard is messing up. When I first boot up my computer, for the first 5 or so minutes, certain keys on my keyboard are unresponsive. Then after a bit, they start working again. I need to fix this ASAP. Thanks!

Hi brittj91,

Try releasing the static power and update BIOS, check if the issue persists. Follow the steps below.

Switch off the system; remove the battery, ac adapter and the power cable. Press and hold down the power button for thirty seconds to drain any excess static power. In addition update the BIOS using the link below.

http://dell.to/13EVLww

In this link punch in the system service tag or express service code and select the appropriate operating system, under the BIOS category select the latest BIOS and install it.

Connect the Ac Adapter before updating the BIOS and do not use the system until it restarts after the update.

Please let me know if this helps.

I tried both of those, and neither on worked. They still are unresponsive for the first few minutes of turning on my computer. :(

Hi brittj91,

Please connect an external keyboard and check if the issue persists.

Hi I am also having the same issues with the keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard is unresponsive on certain keys for upto 5 mins and then all of a sudden starts working again. very weird. The trackpad has never worked, which i'm having to use a usb mouse. I'm using windows 8 and updated to the latest bios and still having this issue

My backspace, \, and enter keys sometimes go unresponsive.  I bought the alienware14 back in January.  Is this a common issue with alienware keyboards?  Is there a software fix or is it a hardware defect?

If the problem doesn't happen on an external keyboard it means the issue is hardware. If this is the problem you're experiencing, send an email to awsocialmedia@dell.com with your Service Tag,contact information and a brief description of the problem.

Same issue here. Alienware 14, just bought it, almost all the first row of letters are unresponsive. Updated the Bios to A09 and tried the static discharge, nothing helped. Usb keyboard works fine, so its a hardware issue. How can I get it replaced ?

Same problem here on my Alienware 14, but different keys.  I just called alienware support and the only option is to pay $269 to send in my laptop to get the keyboard replaced.  Alienware support (dell) say they don't have they keyboard by itself.

I find it rather perplexing and concerning that for such high-end, expensive laptops, the most basic piece of the laptop is obviously defective, making it unusable without an external keyboard.  There really should be a recall on this keyboard, rather than making customers pay out-of-pocket for something that should never fail.

Buyer beware.

Having the exact same problem.  About 8 keys randomly stopped working 2 days ago.  External SUB keyboard works fine,  My warranty is up as my computer is 17 months old so it will cost 270 bucks to send my laptop in to fix something that should last much longer than 17 months in a 2000 dollar laptop.

Disappointing Dell and Alienware.  Been a long time Alienware customer but if this doesn't get fixed this will be my last one.

I'm still having the issue. Just replaced my keyboard.
